a week last friday i took my mare for a walk down the lane, she is shod in front but not behind, i felt her stand on something and twist her hind leg at the same time, i jumped off and looked to see if anything was in her foot, i could not see anything but was very close to yard so lead her back, she wasnt lame at that point but over the week got a little more sore, there was no heat and no swelling, by friday just gone she was abscess lame in the hind foot, i called my farrier and thankfully he came within a couple of hours, he dug around but couldnt find any sign of an abscess but agreed that shes really sore, iv given her bute as i cant bare to see her in so much pain and have been tubbing the foot 3 times a day in epson salts, there is still no heat or swelling, any ideas? my farrier thought she had badly bruised her foot, has anyone else had a horse this lame with a bruised foot?
many thanks for readin :o

I'd be wondering if there was any heat or soreness further up the leg if she gave it a wrench as she stepped on something? How did she behave when the farrier picked up the foot? Was she touchy having it lifted at all? Is she fine picking up the other foot? There's a possibility that she did strain something at the time and as the weeks gone on she's become more sore guarding the strain. If nothing comes out of the foot, or even while you're still soaking and hoping I'd get a good bodyworker (physio/osteo) to check out what's going further up.

thanks for the reply, she was fine when the farrier picked up the leg, there is no heat or swelling in hock,or anywhere else and for the first few days she was soundish, just a little foot sore, she will not put any weight on the leg at all now, i did wonder if it was something else, was also wondering if i should call the vet, i am an experienced horse person having worked and owned horses for about 29 years, i just fall apart when its my own girl:(

just to update, i had the vet out today, my mare was sound this morning and the bit of swelling she did have last night was above the fetlock and there was quite a lot of it, it turns it she has lymphangitis probably caused by a bit of mud fever that she has just had!
