Advice please on A/B's for my Horse

Morning everyone,

Can some please advise me on how to get my horse to eat his antibiotic powder. I have heated hot water and mixed it with conditioning cubes into a mush as advised by my vet, but my horse merely sniffed at it. I visted him during the night and he licked some of it but very little. I am worried as I need to get him to eat 5 packs....

Any advice would be great!

Firstly, make sure he is a bit hungry. I have had a bit of success with treacle butties or add the treacle to the feed. Keep the feed really small and then give another 'un-poisoned' feed later on in the day. If you continue to struggle then it is likely he needs daily IM injections to make sure he gets it.

Thanks Rach for the Advice! I may leave his Haylage to later and just add in his mix then put haylage in after he has cleaned the bucket. Will keep you posted
 
Get a big syringe, tape up the end, and put a bit of water in, half the powder, add more water and mix it thoroughly, syringe into mouth whilst holding head up high so it doesn't come out all over you (obviously you need to take the tape off first, or you can use your thumb to seal the whole whilst you mix it).

Best way, you know they have taken it then.
 
Recently a friend was advised to add powder to a little cooked apple(puree) and add that to a small amount of mix. Feed when feed is due or horse hungry.
 
try using a little salt in mash, to cover up smell, also most horses love salt....I always gave drugs like that in sugar beet mash...to my clever old horse..usually did the trick
 
Make the feed with the danillon in smaller. That way you won't overface him with too much danillon in one go. I usually split the feed, so make up your feed as normal, add water to damp it down, then take half of it out. To the remaining half add the danillon. Give that to your horse. Once he's eaten it put the feed in without the danillon in. Imagine it like you having to eat a huge plate of your favourite food that tasted funny as there was medicine in it, wheras if you had to eat only half it would be much more pleasant.
