Pony has started to get mud fever this year, more of cracked heel really as it was just one break of skin all the way round her fetlock below the joint and above the pastern. she has 2 weeks kept it etc etc and it healed fine but the hair had not started to grow back over yet.

Now she has a very small cut/scab right on the joint (same leg) just below her ergot thing. her leg has become quite sowllen and puffy - altho not nearly as bad as before (she had anti biotics before as i was sure it was infected.

According to YO its not 'that' swollen in mornings and i will still be able to ride her fine as shes not lame - this leads me to believe its very different in the morns to the eves! as when i get up there in the eve its very puffy indeed!!

This new wound is only about 1-2cm long.

I dont know what to do with regards to the swelling - should i be gamgee+bandaging it at night, 24/7 or not at all?

she has no signs of mudfever above the fetlock

I have hibiscrubbed and thoroughly dried it, its clean now so i am applying protocon barrier once daily.

She is not being turned out.

What would your course of action be??

Given the histiry of mudfever in your grazing and that she is clearly susceptible to it I would be keeping her in until the wound has scabbed over thickly. This is going to be a great entry point for the bacteria and the last thing you want is mud fever round a joint.

I'd be inclined to bandage overnight, and turn her out in the day, making sure that the legs are covered with a good emolient lotion.

My thoughts about swelling on legs on stabled horses are:
Is swelling in wrong place is on tendon sheath/ligaments???
Does swelling go down after exercise??? normally if it does good sign.
Do you bandage legs??? if you need to be redo every daily at least
If in wrong place think about cold hosing.... and if still not going down explore options of splints/ligament/teandon but this need vets attention
Next how did wound happen??? need to know this, to stop it happening again
If would is drying up and clean i personnel would let fresh air get to wound in day and bandage at night and if gets worst of becomes very hot very quickly, speak to vet
But if you feel you have to do something - 'purple spray it' and don't turn out until nice scab formed...

Vic, have you tried Camrosa? It worked a treat on Douglas (who is sodding lame at the mo).
If that's no good I am sure Dermobian was marvellous for my old horse, he used to get it really badly.
Can't say enough good about the Camrosa though babe. give it a try.

Not sure! He's not wanting to work on left bend and will spin round if loose schooled. He's a bit short behind but nothing you can really see unless you really know him.
Had the Physio up and he basically put it down to him being so big so young and having growing pains.
Bell are coming to see him next week so he's resting till then.
I know it's expensive but it really does work.. Miracle cure. x
