Pepsi is my rescue shettie, now 31. I noticed last week the coat on his neck was coming out, I presumed moulting, but kept an eye on it. Long story short, I wasnt happy, so clipped him on both sides of his neck. Found dry, scaly patches that obviously irritates him. The same place on both sides. I'm assuming that it's the heat of his coat and mane that has triggered this.

I've been treating with Flamazine, and its MUCH improved. I'm sending this video to my vet to see what he thinks, and obviously I will bus Pepsi there asap if needed. What do you think about it ? Oh and yes, Shy got another tea ?

I've been researching Cushings. Hmmm, I need to have a chat with my vet. I've also looked at ringworm. Also been reviewing feed. Thankyou x
If she is 31, she will definitely have a degree of PPID - it's age-related. If she has never had laminitis, then it's really not having much of a negative effect, but they get skin issues and infections as their immunity is compromised. She looks fab.

I'd have a check for lice too - they love thick fluffy coats, under manes etc. Seen several with them recently! They're very small but occasionally you can see them if you're parting the coat, base of the mane etc.

Our 29yr old Shetland with cushings also gets this. Best thing I have found for it is washing it with ALDI anti-dandruff shampoo.

Seems to tidy up the skin underneath and huge disgusting flakes will come off and it goes away.

If it’s cold - make a lather in one of those big car wash sponges, dab it on, leave for 5 mins, rinse off. Towel dry.

Aha, thankyou. It sounds like he needs testing for cushings.

Those shetty coats are beyond warm and as soon as it heats up but is still wet I generally find a lot get a bit of dermatitis esp if they have thick manes. Two of mine have thick manes and at this time of year I’m in hyper mode for skin and they usually end up with a funny patchy neck clip. I wash it down with some diluted hibi and use botanica or similar until it clears up but I think the air getting at it helps the most. The minis with the finer coats and shorter manes (not Shetland bred) don’t seem to get the issue as much in my case anyway.

We had an aged gelding who had a tiny little scab on his fetlock that wouldn't heal. I too used Flamazine and it then clearly up quickly.

A few weeks later, he had itchy runny eyes and scratched one, resulting in a corneal ulcer. We then had a routine worm count done and he came back as over 3500epg.

All things combined, I asked the vet for a Cushings test and sure enough, he had it. His results weren't too high, from memory around 65, but I chose to medicate rather than leave until the next spring to retest.

Sometimes, these small things are subtle signs of something else going on.

There is a site for Cushings here https://www.careaboutcushings.co.uk/
You can register to get a voucher for a free Cushings test and subsequent yearly free tests.

Good luck!

This sounds exactly like what is going on with Pepsi x

I am researching Cushings and will show the video to my vet this week. Its healing up beautifully with the flamazine. He still has a full thick shettie coat and hasn't started moulting yet. I'll be keeping a close eye on it. I adore him.
