Advice please - re paying for help with horses

I am wanting to pay someone (a friend of a friend) to come and do horses when I'm on holidays but concerned this may not be this simple. What do I need to be careful of and make sure for ins? Only 2 horses at family home (not mine). They would not be riding.


Can anyone advise please?

The BHS website has examples of loan/share agreements. Maybe you could doctor one of these to suit your needs? I 'think' the main thing horse insurance-wise is that they have permission to call vet and farrier in your absence and if you are unable to be contacted have your permission to authorise treatment/euthanasia if necessary. I had to do this for my sharer. You can also put them as a named person on your insurance policy so the insurance are authorised to discuss the policy with them if they have to claim on your behalf... I suppose it depends how long you are on holiday for. I normally just leave my contact details and my parents' for an emergency. I think a lot depends on your insurance policy though, I know my horse is covered whoever is riding or looking after him.

I think what you are asking is your liability towards the friend of a friend should anything happen to her?

If you are not employing her in relation to a business (ie they are your own horses for personal use and she is taking care of them while you are away) then you will probably find you are covered under your household insurance, the same as if you were employing a cleaner or gardener for example, but obviously you need to check this with your insurer.

As far as BHS insurance goes, I'm not sure if this covers you if one of your horses kicks her for example, as you are paying her to look after them. You should probably also check your liability cover for the horses in the event that anything happens while they are in her care, for example they get loose and cause an accident.
