My horse (Stan) felt funny on the hack today , when we set off he was much slower than normal and didn't trot to catch up with the others although he seemed to improve as we got further on.

When I brought him in from the field this afternoon his hock was swollen as you can see in the photo.

Normal right hock

I cold hosed it.

I have had him on linseed oil last year (Feelgood30) and today I have ordered some more and also ordered Cortaflex and will be resting him for a few days.

He is only 13 and is only used for hacking but he is pretty fit because we do hack 6 days a week, mostly around 3 miles/5 miles and sometimes quite long distances e.g. 10 miles

He has had episodes of this in the past but not so far this year.

Advice I have had so far from friends and vet is to do the things I have described - cold hose and rest with turnout.

Does anyone else have ideas about what causes this and what I can do to help my boy who I love more than life itself!

I have a video of him walking in today and will post that too if it helps.

Thanks

Jane

Yes, that is exactly like my mare! It looks like it is probably bog spavin, especially as you have had it before; these things appear to go up and down on occasions. I can't really advise what to do as I am in the same boat myself (see post above....or below :)) and my vets have given very little advice! I'd do what you are doing in consultation with your vets. I think the hard ground has been causing havoc with horses this year - my yard is full of lameness issues. The vet at Leahurst think my mare's swelling was caused by her turning funny as she's set off for a gallop on the hard ground in our field (galloping on her own I add, not me riding her!). Good luck with Stan and hope he gets better soon.

Aww thanks for replying WeeBrown. :) I have been told in the past that it is Bog Spavin. What a name eh! I'm sure it originates from the Middle Ages and they must have a modern term for it now.

Keep in touch and we'll compare recovery.
