Hi

A couple of questions to ask you lovely knowledgeable horsey folk! :o

1) How long would you leave your horse to settle into a new livery yard before riding...? I have been lunging and rode tonight and he was quite naughty..... He will have been at new yard for 7 days tomorrow. Can some of the naughtiness be put down to the move.....?

2) My insurance has increased by nearly 50%! I kind of expected it as it is with a well known insurer that has been in H&H recently about price hikes. Who would you recommend?

Thanks in advance :o)

I ride the day I get there/early the next if we arrive later on... or at least lunge. Always figure that if you go out competing, you don't spend a month getting used to the venue so why should horse have time to get its feet under the table at a new yard? Otherwise maybe he'll start thinking he's actually on holiday :p If your horse has started being silly then I would just give him time to get back into the swing of things - ie he has to earn his keep! :)

I would suggest that a week is a long break, just from a move, I would say a day or so, and then get into it. The biggest issue is when there is a change of owner and location, they take a bit longer to settle then.

Re insurance, cannot help, but you could review your policy and see if you are covered for things you do not need, and what your excess is and so on.

I so agree with Sol. I will ride them from day one. They should not need time to 'settle' but behave as normal.

As said, if you take them to a show they are expected to be 'normal' take them on a different ride they are expected to be 'normal' and so on.

If he misbehaved then he should be corrected and worked harder.

As for insurance I do not insure each horse individually. To expensive.
I have had second thoughts about my dogs - I worked it out that with my older dog I have paid out over £3,000 and not made a single claim.

Thanks for the replies :o

I am taking him out for a hack this afternoon as we would normally and I think I am just being a bit soft - LOL!

I have managed to find insurance for half the price with the same level of cover this morning. Just a joke really. I even rang my original insurance and told them and gave them a chance to retain my custom but they just fluffed around the situation and fed me some bull poo about increases due to rates and because my horse is over 13 they load the premium - that fact that I have never claimed in the entire time I have been with them did not seem to factor at all! *shakes head in dis belief*

On arrival with me, they are usually ridden within an hour of coming off the box.
Then they get rest time in a stable or turned out for a while if possible.

edited to add: I only dont do the above if they are coming in for re-hab training etc, then they will be led out or lunged - something to fit with their program of what they might already be doing well.
Unbroken ones go straight onto a stable/handling routine - new places, new rules :)

So hacked out today and he was a giant knobber! He was coiled like a spring!!! His behaviour was really out of character especially as he was in company and he is normally a donkey when with friends! Lots of jogging and the occasional canter on the spot. we trotted a lot and it tired him out but not really until near to the end of the ride.

I am going to ride tomorrow but lunge him first in an attempt to reduce fizz and any further knobber activity....

I do think that this is due to our move and that everything is new for him (even though we have only moved to the other side of our village). I am just keeping everything crossed that he will simmer down with time.....

Has his routine changed at all? And how settled is he in the field/stable compared to before the move? My mare was always really spooky after a yard move, but provided she was happy in field and stable, settled down within a couple of days to be rideable. Sounds to me like maybe your boy might not be settled within other areas, not just ridden work?

Hi Wildrider

He is fine in the field and stable - totally chilled out, routine is the same.

I lunged him this morning before riding and although pretty forward on the ride a lot more settled.

He stepped out coming home so he knows where 'home' is :o

I think he will settle once he gets used to the new rides and areas :o
