Sending the boy away to be backed......

The lady that I am sending him too has asked that his passport go with him should he need emergency vet treatment.

Is this normal?? I’m worried (probably unnecessarily) that once they are in possession of his passport they can do as they please with him?

Please tell me I am being stupid

xx

Passport should go with the horse - as legally he should have it with him to travel, etc.

Passports are not proof of ownership, so it won't give them any more power.

Passport should be kept with horse, but I understand your concern.
My liveries give me a photocopy of their horse's passports so I can show any inspector that they have one.
The law says that you must be able to produce the original within 4 hours of an inspector's request, so as long as you don't live too far away and are contactable, then you might be able to hang on to it. The original should be with the horse whilst travelling though!

I'd call the horse passport people. I was thinking of putting my boy on full loan and I wasn't going to let them have his passport incase they tried selling him. I think it's risky handing it over.
