as some of you know my 14hh haflinger is for sale, hes currently with a relative although i could bring him home BUT somone has asked to view him the weekend which is fine, im doing the viewing down at my relatives place cause thats where he's settle, only thing is the person coming on saturday wants me to think about a loan at her place for a month then buy him, my major concern is unsettling him for a month for him to come back, but also that its going to turn out after a month ill have him back and me and ponio has been messed around again, should i just stick to my ground and say no, its either a sale or im not interested ?!?!

I would not agree to a loan before sale....would allow any trial at my place but the horse would stay under my control til they paid.........and a month is a long time to make your mind up.....how long to the school summer holidays last these days.about a month?

That was what i was thinking, ive never really been keen on loans, ive always just let the person come back as many times as they needed too.. thank you for your opinion, you've deffo helped me made my mind up!

My friend considered loaning to a potential buyer, however, they would draw up a contract and she would pay a certain amount for the horses per week. The total she had paid would be taken off the final price IF she bought him. The buyer was really genuine and was happy to sign the contract as she knew she was likely to buy him. In the end someone else offered a better home and cash up front so he went to them. But it's maybe something to think about, I always think with a loan you should expect something in return otherwise they just get a free horse to ride for a few weeks!

What about if they paid for him and took him on the understanding that if they really didn't like him or get on with him you would take him back within the first month.

I can understand why people do it, there is nothing worse than being stuck with a horse you don't get on with.
But I certainly wouldn't let them take him without getting the full price up front in case something happened ie had accident in field etc ... you could end up seriously out of pocket

I was thinking of saying they have to get insurance, and i obviously want to view where they would be keeping him. Also, he's fine to be kept on his own if he would be there only horse but he's used to having horses around him if not in the field with him an although he has no attachment issues, he is a horse is thrives apon company so i dont want him feelin depressed, also i dont want to move him around a possible 3 yards in a matter of 3months i dont think thats fair.
I dont know whether i am just better saying you can come back and try him as many times as you need to within reason cause he's not actually advertised atm..

Ahh just rang them to confirm dates/ time for the weekend, and it was a child who has been emailing me and answered the phone, now ive got the idea back into my head that he's just going to be a fix for the holidays

In that case don't do it!
Some people just want a freebie and i'm sure your little man deserves much more than that.

It sounds like you may already know what the best thing for you to do is and I believe in trusting your instinct.
Good Luck

Hmm i shall let them come still as he will be put up fo sale, so not poit turning them down, i havent agreed to the loaning iv said im not keen onit he is for sale, they have asked me to think about it, so i shall just keen to my answer and see what they say.

Dont do it. Not fair on you or the pony. There are some ppl out there who have been known to disappear with the pony without paying.

we bought a pony a few years ago where we paid the full price after vetting but with the agreement that if it did not work out they would buy him back for £500 less.I now do this when i sell my daughters ponies as i would rather sell the pony and know where he is going ,i would worry if he did not work out where he might end up . £500 is alot to loose so hopefully people would only purchase pony if they thought it was going to work and just want pease of mind that they wont get stuck with it if it doesn't.

HI, Please be caeful, we had this many years ago and our horse was totally ruined by someone.
You will be amazed how much chaos and damage someone can cause in a month. Our osft, willing horse became a dangerous, panic-ridden nightmare.
Some issues afetr a decade were never resolved.
No loans- trial at your place (where you can supervise) I suggest is a godo half way point.

Do we go to a private car seller and ask if we can take it for a month - to see if we like it?
I think not....

i never do trial/loan before buy...

the pony could easily get ruined or broken....

i'm sure she should know whether she wants the pony or not..lets her have a couple of visits if you are happy with that..but let the pony stay put.

i mean you dont have a car or a house on a months trial, do you??

If you even think of loaning prior to sale then insist that he is freezemarked, microchipped and vetted before he leaves so that there is no doubt about his identity or health. Also ask the lonees to confirm their addres by supplying you with their rates and electricity bills and a copy of their passport and driving licence. That will make it less likely for them to do a runner with your horse.

Thankyou for all your advice, ive decided im not going to let him go anywhere he'll stay with me til the right home, and money comes along!

ive found out she had a 13.3 arab x thats for sale so apart of me think they want the loan cause they dont have the money til its sold, i may be wrong just what i thought ..

Aswell as all that im confused on why they want to come see my man given he's only 14hh if they already have a 13.3 ?

hmm, who knows... im going to give her a call tonight to let her know im not interested in letting him go on a trail, that they may just come back an try him again so maybe they wont be interested after all ?
