My horse cut himself in field on his face and has stitches. The vet has given bute and antibiotics which I have to put in his feed, but he is not eating, I think it may hurt him to eat because of where the cut is. I have tried giving him his feed without antibiotics in but he is still not eating, and he is leaving his hay too. The vet told me to keep him in for a couple of days, but I am worried he will starve himself. I let him graze when I took him out to stretch his legs yesterday and this morning and he seems to be eating the grass ok. Do you think I should turn him out (worried about flies etc tho) Also how could I make him eat his antibiotics they are in granual form (have called vet to discuss but waiting for call back) so help in meantime would be great!

Sounds like he hates the taste of the antibiotic, if he's grazing normally. Some are very picky. You can get some that tastes nicer but it's a bit more expensive. Yr vet shld advise. Good luck!

If you have a large syringe, mix it up with water or something like apple juice if he likes that and syringe it down him like a wormer. Be very prepared to raise his head higher than normal else you'll get a fountain all over you instead!

Absolute best course of action is to buy a carton or 2 of Tesco's El Cheapo Apple Juice. Slop a good cupful into ned's feed. I promise you ned will think he's died and gone to heaven.
