As some of you know my horse went lame and has been in horsepital having tests and MRI, I now have the results and wonder if any of you have dealt with anything similar.

Diagnosis is Collateral Ligament damage to both front feet in the coffin joint, also an injury to the sesamoid(sp) ligament or tendon that wraps round it (sorry haven't got the written report yet!)

Treatment is 6 months box rest, shock wave therapy to the sesamoid and also the coffin joints, the IRAP injections into the coffin joints.

The horse is 4 years old, he is coping with box rest at the moment, the problem is, is that my YO seems to think I'm crazy to box rest and should have him turned out. Vets have now said due to the findings he is not even allowed in hand grazing as must not be moved.

I am very happy to do whatever the vet suggests as I want the best recovery for him, but would like to hear from anyone who has dealt with these injuries before and if the results have been good.

Thanks

Ohh my gosh hun, really sorry to read this. What have you done to deserve all this bad luck? :-(

It sounds very similar to what Gem has done (or what showed up on the scans and xrays- as didnt go as far as MRI)

She has/ had desmitis of the straight seasmodian distal ligament- i think it is the same one- it goes down into the back of the fetlock??

She has gotten much better with paddock rest, cold hosing, cold gel and ice boots at night, egg bar shoes and I also started feeding Bosweilia, which has been really good. I am now walking her around the village each day until the ground goes really soft when we may try a trot.

In your case- the vets have advised him to be kept as still as possible (mine said a tiny paddock/ resitricted) but then my girl at her age.....

Have they said what the prognosis will be?- also about changing his shoes to give more support to the heel?

you also may want to try this Boswelia- it seems to have worked for Gem- and it is good for ligaments and tendons. xx

HUGE <<<<HUG>>>> and you know where we are if you need us xxxxx

Hey Bec sorry I haven't been in contact it has just been so mad!!

Yes it's the same ligament as Gem but just a swelling so they think he has injured it rather damaged if you get what I mean. Yes he will have special shoes - can't remember what type he said but not bar shoes which I thought would have been obvious. The vet is hopefully going to call the farrier and tell him what needs doing. I guess he might have to get the shoes on order??

The main problem really though is the coffin joints. What is Boswelia? I have been advised to also put him on cosequin.

Are you up at Sparrows tomo?? xxx

Marchtime is the best person to pm she wont mind we have discussed same problems for last year.I have been through this with my 8 yr old tb and rather than do prolonged box rest as he has other problems I found him lovely companion home were he wont be pushed.Everytime I brought mine back into work he broke down again and it just wasnt fair.
The irap injections seem good way forward although this wasnt option for me.My tb was 4 when his problems started and after £11000 had to make a decision to retire him.His new owner says hes sound after summer off but I know in my heart he will only ever be field sound.
To keep your horse happy and relieve stress I would consider taping of small stable size paddocks (I did about 6) and letting him mooch about .Having sun on his back and grass will help his mental state as he is so young. If the paddocks are same size as his stable it wont hurt him.My vet agreed with this for my horse and he never played up like others on box rest.Could be worth discussing with your vet as he knows the extennt of the injury. If you need any more input feel free to contact me.

thanks Cellie, I really appreciate it! i do hope that the IRAP will be the winner and that we can get him sound. The vet thinks that with the shockwave and IRAP that is is a good combination for full recovery! We'll see though and I will pm with prpgress and questions as they arise. thanks xx

Hi M

I think I would ask vet if ok to put him in stable sized paddock once he is shod, but as he is still barefoot maybe just keep him in. He is sensible (mostly) but agree, right now he is being walked out in hand, might be a bit different if he is just in his box 24/7?

Poor you - it really is just one thing after another.

Hi just read through your other replies and thought I should mention that I used boswellia and msm( boswellia is natural form of pain relief have a look on ebay under horse supplements ) its kinder on stomach and is good for inflammation.
Ollie had shockwave for 80 % tendon tear , all done at same time ,and his tendon healed really well.I retired him as companion and possible gentle hack to make sure he didnt do too much work.Good luck with everything will be thinking of you

Which vets was it?

My mare has similar injuries but without the sesamoid stuff. I only had shockwave to the collateral ligaments, did 2 months box rest with walking in hand, then turned her away barefoot. She came sound but we've not brought her back to work so don't know how well she'd stand up to it. The farrier wasn't optimistic due to my mare's foot conformation, and the fact that her feet don't cope with shoes well.

Hi Hun, sorry just got back from riding the terrible two.

Yes I am at Sparrows tomorrow, taking May and also jumping another ladies horse who isnt too confident as he has a huge jump (I LIKE!) and jumps her out the saddle. Only 2nd time i will have sat on him, so come along for the laughs!! It would be good to catch up.

So do the vets think he will make 100% recovery??

If not, you should just turn him out for the winter, and see how he comes back in the spring. Everything else the vets are suggesting is just more £, he is 4, do you really want to be injecting joints that early on? xx

Cellie, I am glad I am not the only one using this amazing product. I really would reccomend it xx
