Can anyone help please before i decide if i should buy?

I have been advised to use an 'Army Reversible' bit also known as the 'Military bit'.

I have tried one on my horse and he seemed to go well, I am using double reins.

However, I do a lot of jumping and I hunt; Should you jump a horse in this bit or not?

I was using a Sam Marsh Pelham but when i jumped him in it his mouth was sore so I do not want to use it anymore.

Any help would be much appreciated.

According to a post on another forum (newrider)

Quote "I have a spode plate with david Broom(sp) and Sunsalve and he is showjumping in a Liverpool, plus flash, plus martingale!"

mind you that was in 1960....

Depends on how good a rider you are? Any bit can cause damage but the army reversible is not the 'softest' of bits, with great potential for a sore poll, amongst other things.
Does your horse really need such hefty brakes? And does the bit suit your horses mouth conformation?

Hi Teddy

Yes, he does need to use it, he is in a Sam Marsh Pelham but his mouth has got wider and I cannot find one big enough (He was a 6 and now a 6.5) so i have to find an alternative, I have been advised by trainers to use the Military as I cannot get the Sam Marsh.

He is well schooled and recieved the best training ( people who train for the Whittakers) but unfortunately he is an oppinionated bolshy steam train who evades every other bit.

All i want to know is, can or should you jump and /or hunt in a Military Reversible.

You shouldnt use a dutch gag with only one rein but plenty do! If the bit is suitable for the horses mouth conformation, he is comfortable in it and you are a good enough rider then yes, otherwise no!

(You probably know it's a driving bit- this doesnt mean you cant ride in it but depends on points above!)

I'd have thought that 'people who train for the Whittakers' would have been the ones to ask.

And i did ask, but as i am a member of this forum, it is nice to hear other peoples experiences/opinions!
People who may hunt and jump and can tell me how they have found things, you see?

Well 'people who train for the Whittakers' presumably know about jumping, and very likely hunting.

Its alright, dont bother replying to this thread.

I only asked a question and it seems that there is some anger or unhelpfulness in this forum.

I will sort myself out, thank you for replying though.

Can this thread be closed please?

Wow someone got out of bed on the wrong side today!

What's wrong with asking for other opinions?!! As a veteran on here surely you know how many different opinions and experiences you can get from people through these forums.

Well done for putting people off a constructive conversation!

Thank you Velocette x

I am agonising over this problem at the moment, I got home from work and thought i would log on and ask other riders (most people I know are not horsey, and even the horsey ones have no clue)

This is such a large forum, i thought someone must have used one of these bits and wanted an independent opinion.

I hope you get some good advice. I tend to find you get a wide variety of opinions on everything here which sometimes doesn't end up giving you a clear answer but I suppose you just go with what works best for you and your horse in the end.

It's a shame on here that some people seem to post purely to make accusations and to be critical of people who are just looking for some info or wanting to chat about something.

Anyway, I have no idea about the bit as have never used it. Hope you are able to make your decision about it :-)

I have no idea about the army reversible, but if he goes well in the sam marsh, you can get bits made to measure. I struggled to find a bit big enough to fit my boy and was about to get one made before getting lucky and finding what I needed on eBay. Abbey bits was one place I remember that I found to make one? Might be a better option?

Agree with the made to measure, might be a long term option!
Nothing wrong with jumping in an army reversible, as long as you give when needed you can jump in anything. Might be worth trying different mouth pieces though? Or changing often, as I do with my driver!
Don't worry about the comments you get here, there are a lot of experts around and they seem to congregate on HHO. Keep asking your questions and don't rise to the bait or feed the trolls. Good luck!

Sorry you have had such a welcome!

Anyway, I have SJed a horse in one (many moons ago!) and I know someone who hunts with one, so in answer to your question, yes you may do both, but no hanging onto the reins!
