Advice please

Our yard is at the bottom moreorless, of the South Downs no woods. bracken just open grazing on the whole, yesterday I found a tick on my mare's neck, first I thought it was a bad bit as she is a sensitive soul, flicked at it and the dratted thing flicked out. Anyone out there had this happen and what did you do?

Did the head of the tick come out too when you flicked it? If not it needs to and the advice I have read on here says to smother in vaseline (or is that the whole tick) so it suffocates then it will come out. I think if you do a search on here you will find some info on ticks and the removal of them.

For future reference, vets sell tick hooks for a few pounds which are a pretty foolproof to get the dratted things out. They are fairly easy to twist out by hand with practice, but if you are unsure I would use a hook
