Hi i would just like a bit of advice please my wife has a 16 month old gypsy cob, this morning i went to get him out of his stable and take him to the field he come out fine but after about 10 steps he dragged his hind leg and then for was fine.

We get into the field i removed his head collar he turned to walk away and he lifted his hind leg and put it back dawn a number of times. He was ok for about 5mins then he dragged it again i went over to him to look to see if he had anything stuck in it when i went to lift his leg it must of been a bit painful as he pulled it away after getting i up there was nothing to be seen.

So i was wondering if it could be cramp or he has been asleep on it.

Any advice please. :confused::confused:

Did you check if he had a digital pulse? Don't want to alarm you but my horse did the same, turned out he had laminitis in his hinds. It may not be but i would bring him in if he is no better, on a deep bed and ring your vet. Better safe than sorry.

If he is lifting his hind legs is an extreme action before putting them down, it could be Stringhalt.

A youngster on our yard has a locking patella. He often has moments where his back legs seem to stick (or suddenly give way) then it is fine again.

May be worth a quick check over by the Vet.

If you put a search in Google there is a video which show you where to find it. As you are new to this it is hard for me to explain how to find it. Is there someone more experienced on your yard that could help you? I really think you should call your vet, it maybe nothing but you need to get it checked.

Sounds to me like it could be a locking stifle. I know a couple of young ponies that sometime come out the stable like that and drag one hind leg. After a while they walk it off but that is what the vet has diagnosed the problem is. I suspect with him being young it is probably caused by the way he is growing and he will probably grow out of it.

I will be interested to hear what the vets says.
