I have just started competing at local shows in various ridden classes. I've been schooling my large cob (16.2) for a few months now and he's showing massive improvement but we do still have to work on his outline and him coming more round and softer in the contact. He's in a french link snaffle is is happy to work on the flat and over jumps in this bit.

I recently competed in a novice WH class and the judge gave me very constructive criticism re his outline, (he pokes his nose a bit). all of which is no suprise as I know this is our weakness and it's taking time to improve slowy but surely. I have weekly lessons on him and each week the improvement is massive.

The judge said to me that he would probably benefit from putting him in a double bridle or at least a pelham to make him bring his head in or to try using draw reins.

I have no experience of double bridles or draw reins so would never just use either without any training. I don't particulary want to put him in a pelham either just to make him look good............ advice please, would you just continue with his schooling and over time he will come softer naturally or go down the route of a pelham etc?
