Advice please

Hi All

I'm currently on maternity leave and trying to get my head around how i can work with my baby in tow (I am freelance groom). Having given up riding for the medium term i advertised the majority of my tack on preloved and was shocked at the response I got - i could have sold my stuff 10 times over.

This got me to thinking about the market for 2nd hand goods. I didnt think there was one anymore with so much cheap new stuff being available - but there obviously is! I must admit that when i lived at home i spent a lot of money in the local 2nd hand shops on good quality used tack.

I'm debating whether to try and source used horsey stuff and try and sell on for a profit - either online or by 'car-booting' at shows etc. My question is
what sort of things would interest you 2nd hand?
and would you want to be able to get new stuff from the same stall e.g leadropes etc and if so - what sort of thing?

For me it would be good rugs, saddles, bridles(but make sure stitching is still good) grooming kit(again disinfect them before selling on)

Hi , Ive done this . Things that dont seem to sell are : average show jackets , people and horse boots . Things that do seem to do well are good quality jods/breeches (Ariat , Pikeur etc ) but at a good price . New or v good condition good quality bridles etc . Good quality rugs . Good quality hardly used people boots .Not hats or saddles .Lead ropes headcollars but only if a good name or unusual .People will buy to upgrade their gear(horse and people) so there is no point in ie cheap day to day jods as people will source these as cheap as poss. I went to 1-2 day events didnt do Agriculture Shows only horse events. It depends where you are going to sell , online or at events . You have to compete against EquestrianClearance etc so not easy but you have the added bonus of being able to maybe source one offs for customers and offer that personal touch maybe carry silk dressage stocks or body bases in cross country designs/colours ?

def agree that quality is important, and unusual items. I couldnt believe how many people wanted my grooming kit - that was the biggest suprise i think so i can well believe these sell well.
I'm actually asking if i can pitch at my local country store - they do sell horse stuff so may say no but if i dont tread on their toes with my items they may say yes as theyre pretty accomodating. There I have a guaranteed footfall and much easier than tanking all over the countryside competing with umpteen other stalls - fingers crossed!
At uni the local country store (animal feeds, hardware, horse stuff) had a huge 2nd hand tack section covering the whole of the upstairs. you asked them to display your stuff and they got 10% of sale price - it did really well - i certainly spent a fair wack of my student loan in there! nearly all of my favourite bits of leatherwork, rugs etc came from there.
is there anywhere i should be looking to source stuff? i can only think of places like ebay and preloved?

Ive moved so at the moment not doing it . I source at local tack shops notice boards , shops selling off things end of lines etc etc . Everyone always said "what a good idea" and bought . Its time consuming and washing labeling , prices etc its not easy money and presentation and quality is everything.Good Luck.
