I am looking to breeding another foal with my Dutch warmblood mare (Voltaire/Lux Z)
. She had a foal in 2010 from Millenium who is turning into a lovely horse and we are really pleased with him so far.
This foal would be bred for us,not to sell but I really would love to breed a dun/buckskin as I love the colour.
I know I am looking at either a cremello or perlino stallion. My mare is bay.
Ideally I didn't want to breed a pure warmblood foal and would like something smaller than her. My mare is 17.1hh. Her foal is already 16hh at 3 years old.
Can anyone help or advise on suitable stallions to use.
I really like Magician but again he is a warmblood and 16hh.
I can't find anything smaller that really grabs me.
Be grateful for any suggestions or input.

This is a real Marmite stallion (Kambarbay) as he is an Akhal Teke... but he is Pearlino (and homozygous for agouti) so you would be guaranteed a buckskin foal.

Breeding for colour and keeping quality/conformation etc... can be tricky as there aren't many top notch double dilute stallions around (in fact they are pretty rare).

What about a single dilute stallions? OK, you wont be guaranteed a buckskin, but it would open your options and you might get lucky on the colour front anyway. http://www.stallionsonline.co.uk/stallion_55458.html

You will need to keep the technical talk simple as I am not a breeder and although I have looked into it a bit it is still all a bit overwhelming lol. As I say this foal will be bred as her first foal was,for us to keep.
Crellow4 I can only find one photo of Xiviers Sinatra and that is as a yearling?
I actually like Kambarbay but wasn't sure what that would produce and again at 16hh am I going to get something too big?

Two more.

Don't forget that if your mare has a hidden chestnut gene and you use a chestnut based stallion (or a stallion with a hidden chestnut gene) you will have a chance of getting a chestnut/palomino foal.

OK - smaller stallions.

You could also look at Buckskin Connemara Stallions (might be advertised as Dun, but they are buckskin ;) ).

ETA - this will help you with the colour bit (scroll down to cream and dun). :)

I think there are Welsh d and Connemara perlino/cremellos around, was there a member here with a buckskin foal from a tb mare and a cremello Connemara?

Faracat: I love Classics Charmeur he is stunning but what percentage chance do I have of producing a buckskin foal?
As this is my one last chance I really want what I want if you know what I mean. I won't breed form her again as I will not part with any and can't keep collecting until I get my buckskin lol. I thought the only way to guarentee a buckskin was to put her to a cremello or perlino? Maybe I have it wrong.

A palomino would have a 50% chance of producing a single dilute (one copy of cream) foal, but as pally is a chestnut based colour he could only pass on chestnut to the foal. If your mare has a chestnut gene, that means you could get a chestnut or pally foal. Also she might only have one copy of agouti and even if the foal is black based and does get the cream gene, without agouti the foal would be smoky black.

If the colour is number one on your list (and palomino wont do), then you need a perlino stallion which is homozygous for black and agouti.

As Kambarbay has produced pally foals, he does have a chestnut gene. You could have your mare tested for black. If she doesn't have a chestnut gene IE she has two copies of black, then you could breed her to Kambarbay and you would always get a buckskin foal.

Xiviers Sinatra is in Cornwall, his owner is on FB - Abbie Holmes I think. If you contact her she'll send you some recent photos of Frank. I also think Kambarbay is worth a look - Rosalyn has a beautiful Palomino colt, Ikonique, this year. Have a look at the Solaris Sports Horse website x

There is both a perlino and a cremello stallion at Brackenspa stud. Dunhill Desert Storm and Crowns Wonder Pearl. Both lovely stallions but very different. Worth a look

Isn't Bathleyhills Monet a Palomino? Assuming your mare doesn't carry red, he would only give you a 50% chance of a dilute. If you are breeding to produce a guaranteed Buckskin you need a Perlino who is homozygous for Agouti - that way you don't need to test your mare at all.

Emlybob: I have looked at both those stallions in the past and loved them both but they are just too big and I'd ideally like something smaller this time.
I agree if I want a guaranteed buckskin I need a perlino but I know this limits my options. I really like Kambarbay and this would mean I wouldn't need to test my mare.
Even if I got her tested the options I would have do not guarantee me the colour I want still! If I didn't like a perlino stallion then I would get her tested as it is obviously not just about colour when breeding as I want to end up with a foal that can go on to do what I want to do.

If your mare carries red (chestnut), then she could produce a palomino when bred to Kambarbay as he also carries chestnut. You just need to decide if this is a problem for you.

It's very rare that I gush about a Perlino, but that chap looks like liquid gold... He's lush!! If his offspring look half as good as him I'd pop him to a mare of mine ;)

Yes I like him too. :) There's something alluring about Tekes.

Sadly I think I confused the OP as I hadn't realised that he carried red/chestnut to begin with.

I do think that people need to be really careful when breeding for one specific colour and make sure that the stallion and mare complement each other conformation wise etc...

Faracat agree i would not choose a stallion purely for colour if i did not think the pairing was the right for confirmation etc.I really appreciate all your help. We are having my mare tested but I am pretty taken with Kambarbay I think he is stunning.

No problem todd. :)

My comment wasn't aimed specifically at you - more a general point. There are some dilute stallions out there that really wouldn't have been kept entire if they were plainer in colour.

Kambarbay has stock on the ground now, so you can see what he produces from different types of mares. When I became aware of him he didn't have foals on the ground and as an unusual breed, which doesn't have 'classical' conformation it was a matter of speculation as to what he would produce. He isn't an extreme Teke, which actually goes in his favour when crossing with other breeds (going through his bloodline he does have very typey ancestors though).

I really love Midoak Mardis Gras. 15.2hh PBA, plenty of bone, amazing temperament. After meeting him, I'm now desperately trying to find an excuse to use him :)
