Ok - a bit of background info on my horse! He's rising 6 this year and I've had him just over a year. I took him pre-novice eventing last season and started BSJAing in October in the hope of getting him ready for some BE Novices at the end of this season. I've been jumping him in discoveries and 1.05m usually on a fortnightly-basis and have been getting double clears and placings regularly. The jump-off in the discovery and the 1.05m have consisted of mostly 1.10m fences and he's been flying them, clearly not phased at all. I'd now like to make the step up to the 1.10 newcomers, however I'm aware that the jump-off will be 1.20 and possibly 1.25. When I school him between competitions I don't tend to jump anything higher than 3 ft/ 1m -ish and work on technical things with grids, bounces, angles, XC-style fences, distances etc, rather than a simple course - hence I tend to keep them smaller in case he makes a mistake so he doesn't lose confidence. What should I do to prepare him for newcomers? Presumably I need to school him over some bigger fences or a combination with a 1.25m second part so he's jumped the height and is ready? Any advice, tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks

you prep same as me, put the last part of grid up as you say. i would at least try a double up to height. though i dont jump courses at home, i find they get bit stale

Could you have a go at a few big ones in a lesson where you have some eys on the ground to prevent either of you getting fazed? I am always more confident with my trainer than on my own and she sneakily wacks the fences up when I am not looking!
