Evening all,

Im pondering on something, and would like your guy's advice :)

My 2 foals (approx 4 month) have very bad rainscald on the top of there bums, but as they are foalies..they have very thick fur!

Is it a good idea to clip a little patch on there bums, to exposed the scabs so i can clean it properly?

Or just leave the hair on, and try shampooing through their 'wooly bear' of coats?

Thanks

xx

Leave the hair on and just treat as you would any horse with rainscald. I'm assuming they have rugs, because foals need protection from endless rain that can compromise the skin even more than adult horses do, as their baby immune systems aren't fully developed yet. If they aren't rugged, why not? If you're struggling to ease the scabs off in order to effectively treat the tissue underneath the scabs, it's ok to dilute a bit of hibiscrub in warm water, rub it well in and leave it without rinsing. Next day the scabs should be easier to gently tease off. I'd wash the rugs as well because the bacteria that causes rainscald can be on the rugs too.
