hi my horse tends to open his mouth or gets hold of the bit tried a flash nose band which he hates so i take it he will have the same effect with a grackle. tried numerous different bits pee wee, Waterford ,full cheek snaffle. at a loose end don't know where to go from here gone back to basic and brought a french link snaffle today which i am going to try tomorrow any other advice would be welcome.

Well, a flash isn't really designed to strap their mouths shut, so to make it tight enough to would make him very uncomfortable.

Might be worth trying a drop noseband, which is designed to stop them opening their mouths...

What about a Micklem Bridle? I've used one on a horse that was normally ridden in a grackle to stop it opening its mouth and in the micklem it didn't do it.

thank you ladies, with the micklem you can use it bitless too cant you?? cause that was the next choice i was thinking of ??

Currently going through this problem with my mare, she opens her mouth so wide that the bit and the bit rings go through and then spins. She also doesn't like wearing a flash, or a hanging cheek bit so today I ordered a full cheek.
It is hard to know what to do as with my mare she has a very hard mouth but responds better to lighter bits and nose bands etc so the bit I have ordered is a slim snaffle with a copper peanut so she has something to play with. Im also thinking about getting a comfort bridle so that everything is more comfortable for her.

i got a french link loose ring snaffle today will you let me know how you get on with your one :)

Unfortunately I cant use a loose ring with my mare as when she opens her mouth the whole Thing goes through and she spins, that's why I have ordered a full cheek. I would recommend something with a copper lozenge or peanut though as its something else to help occupy them, my mare much prefers the copper!
