Advice re CalMag or Mag Ox

Hi guys,

Can anyone give any feedback on the above products? I am looking for a supplement for my mare whos is moody when in season and other times is well behaved but a bit stressy.

I have a friend who uses CalMag and swears by it but I know she has to grind it due to the grainy consistency and I would be worried about the implications of using it longterm.

I have seen on other forums that Mag Ox is used and is a fine powder.

Any feedback would be great - thank you.
 
I have just started giving it to my horse. It is a fine white powder, I mix it in with his Lo Cal and speedibeet and he eats it up no problem. Too early to say whether it has any effect yet tho. It won't work if they are not deficient in magnesium, but it is good for their feet and also for laminitics and horses out 24/7. I got mine from ebay, but there are other suppliers. Try googling it. It's called pure mag ox (heavy)

Thanks for the feedback - my friend uses the CalMag as her mare is very stressy but I am not sure of the ingredients - will look for more info on the Magcalm though.
 
I've recently started using it (got it off Ebay) and even my very suspicious, fussy TB didn't notice it! He can be very funny if you try to sneak strange things into his dinner!

Both TB's are very chilled at the moment, maybe it's working, wanted to start them on it before the spring grass came through. Even managed to separate them today at a fun ride when one went lame and had to turn round and go back to the lorry - they would normally have gone loopy but were very calm.

Sorry, meant to say I mean mag ox heavy.

I have used Naf Magic in the past, but the mag ox is a lot cheaper!
 
I used MagOx last year, he ate it no problem. I didn't feed it for calming purposes though so can't comment on that. I think MagOx is supposed to be better for them than CalMag, but I might be getting it confused with Epsom salts

I have used CalMag as I have a horse who is barefoot and it's supposed to help with footiness, but now she is several years down the line I don't use it any more. It is very gritty and can cause scouring apparently which is why MagOx is preferred.

It is an active ingredient in many calming supplements, and certainly a very cheap way to buy it.

However for a mare you may do better to look at supplements containing Agnus Castus. Oestress is good but very expensive. I use D&H Stroppy Mare with good results, which is a lot cheaper.
 
CalMag apparently can cause other problems like bone problems. It was a trend to feed it in my area for a while until some horses went lame which they put down CalMag. Id never feed it.

Dont know anything MagOx.
