Long time no post. Some of you may remember me posting about moving yards due to restrictions etc at the yard Im on at the moment. Well D Day is around the corner and I am moving at the end of the month.
My plan is to try and have my horse living out most of the winter so I am looking at getting a mobile field shelter. Im a bit puzzled as to what size to get. There will be my 15.2hh ISH, my friends 16hh and my little shetland when he comes back from his little holiday at my friends.
What size shelter do I need? Oh and have any of you bought one off the internet any recommendations?

Thanks :)

I would have thought ideally you would need something that could be subdivided at least for the two big horses incase they need to be shut it. So minimally 10x20 with slip rails for middle and front and shorty could pass below the rails. This arrangement would only work if sensible natured horses!! Also if you leave the middle rail or a gate in then it has two seperate compartments which should also reduce bullying problems. Ideally it would be bigger than this but it really depends on your budget. You could enlarge this idea, maybe enough for a sep area for shetland and/or bigger areas for big guys. Also add a tackroom or whatever.

I have a 12 x 24 with 2 openings in the front and a nice 4' overhang.

I have found that 3 of my horses will stand in together but most of the time it is 2 inside and the other longways under the overhang.

I think the problem with the ones with only one opening is that if you get a bossy horse then sometimes one can get stuck in the end with no exit and get kicked, have seen it happen before.

I would go for a 24' x 12' personally, especially if you have 3 in total. I have that size for two 15.2hh horses fitted with standard stable doors so it divides into two stalls if they need to be in for any reason (as cm2581 mentioned) and there is little room to play with when they're both in.
The more room there is for them to avoid/ skirt around each other, the better in case they do get a bit frisky :)

I got mine from Foster Fencing online four years ago but I don't see stables/ field shelters on their website now so don't know if they still do them. I think it cost about £1600. The roof was rubbish but we replaced it with a sturdier one and it recently withstood 120mph winds in the storms we had last month (It is anchored on each corner) so can't complain

I would get a 12 x 24. Any bigger and it cant be mobile, but any smaller could be a problem with three!
Look on ebay, there are lots on there, many have excellent feedback, and you may bag yourself a bargain!

Thank you everyone for your comments. Thanks juliette I will have a look for them and will most defenately look at ebay joeanne. Thanks again!
