I have just had the results of a 5 stage vetting done on a horse I’m thinking of buying and although the horse in question has passed, the vet has commented he has a slight roach back, which he said he didn’t think would affect him to much but it was a personal preference thing (some people don’t like it others don’t mind). As I want to do a bit of everything with him DR, SJ and XC not up to a high level but I’d like to affiliate.
I was wondering what peoples opinions were.
I guess if the vet thought it would be a problem he wouldn't of passed him?
I’ve ridden the horse twice and find him comfortable to ride, there doesn’t seem to have been any problem fitting saddles to him (he’s on a big yard and they just used there spare tack), and he doesn’t seem to have any back pain. He got 62.92% in his first Novice DR test and seems to have plenty of scope
Has any one else got experience of a roach back, what problems is he likely to have as he ages? Also will he be insurable or will they try and exclude his back as I’m sure it will be mentioned in the vetting report?
Thank you for taking the time to read the above all opinions greatly appreciated

roach backs tend to mean a not-quite-so-comfy ride... but are usually stronger than average back (think about the shape of a bridge).

my horse has a bit of a roach back. it means that conformationally he isn't 'perfect' but that doesn't bother me at all cos i have intention of showing... so it causes no problems for us.

have you got a photo? x

I had a horse with a huge roach back and he was the most talented jumper i have ever sat on.

bad points- he could do enormous bucks, made worse by his already rounded back and his dressage was a little difficult as we moved up the ladder as he couldn't really loosen up over his loins.

here are a few pics of him so you can see it didn't bother him- his roach was huge but you couldn't notice it when he had a saddle on.

I know there not overly helpfull due to the way hes stood and the fact hes tacked up and jumping, but again all comments greatly appreciated
Thank you

can see the links now but the page is blank

There are a lot of things I wouldn't consider but this isn't one of them

so
If its not too bad it wouldn't put me off unless I wanted to show him. Some are uncomfortable to ride but other than that it wouldn't bother me.
