4/5 weeks ago when XC schooling, my horse banged his knee on a fence. Knee immediately swelled up to giant proportions
and it was half the size of a football the next day.. The main swelling is above the knee and over the top half of the kneecap, rather than actually on the knee.
He had 3/4 weeks off work. When we started light work again( just pottering about in walk), the swelling was virtually gone. A few days later, he went to see the osteopath/healer, and after treatment the knee was completly cold and flat ( maybe magic does happen?!) and so I stepped up the work . He has been doing mostly 1 hour walks with a few little trots and a few strides of canter.
Yesterday the knee had swollen up again. about 1/2 to 1 inch outwards, with heat.
Absolutely no lameness or soreness.
Just been in touch with the vet and he says if no lameness it could just be a tendon sheath thing as the swelling is mostly above the knee, and as he is not lame/sore, it could be that he always has extra fluid in that knee and he will always have that there. If lame then he should have xrays/scans.
But he's not lame, but I suppose that I will get the xrays/scans done anyway just for precaution.
Just wondered if anyone has encountered this kind of knee injury before??
Also, my other question is, say worse case scenario is that he has chipped the knee, then can they still be sound with a bone chip floating around in there?? or would a chipped knee be showing definate lameness.
