Advice wanted regarding hind check ligament injuries/rupture
I believe this is a rare injury as my vet has limited information.
Anyone with information or experience of these injuries please help as I am trying to formulate a rehab programme.

If you go onto search and type in check ligament there is a horse and hound article that might help .My horse did his curb two years ago so I might be able to help with rehab programme if you dont have any come back with check ligament.

one horse i look after did his hind check and his ddft. treatment was no different to if it ahd been in front he was out of work for about 6 months (box rest then small paddock then normal field) then was given another 3 months off as it was middle of winter. has been back in full work for about 9 months and seems absoulty fine. vets did say as it was a hind would prob heal better as not taking all the weight and they can rest it easily. the vet that first saw him got very excited and stated how intersting and uncommon his problem was (never a good sgin!!!)! gd luck.

Doesn't your heart sink when vet says 'that's rare'? Mine said it was only the second case she'd seen in 11 years! Has your horse had scans? They're very informative. My vet said 3 months box rest and see how it went (guarded prognosis as horse is 33).In the event he only spent a week in as went anorexic until turned out with his pair bond. Took along time to own up to vet! However, 2nd scan at 3 months showed marked improvement and he is now hackable again, so don't worry if things don't go to plan - listen to your horse! Oh, and Equiflex/Cortaflex very useful

PS my vet found a very good article by Sue Dyson - try googling 'Desmitis of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon' - it's in a veterinary manual, chapter 72 page 650 but don't know the name of the book!

I can't believe I've found this post, my horse has torn the DDFT just above the hock also lesions in the tarsal sheath, my vet has operated via Arthroscopic Surgery and also said these cases are rare he first of all diagnosed arthritis and cortisone injections because there was no swelling at all! He is currently on six weeks box rest and I have been given a "fair" prognosis. Any straws to clutch at would be appreciated!
