Hi my horse who is a 14 year old ex racer has recently started drinking lots of water. When I say a lot I mean 150l of water over 24 hours... if anything that is an under estimation! The vet is already involved and bloods have been taken. He is feeling a little lethargic and his vitals were slightly high but nothing too dramatic. Other than that he has no other symptoms, he is eating, pooing normally and enjoys his time in the field.

Anyway...

My two questions are 1) does anyone have any similar experiences?

2) he is currently in at night. I have tried all sorts of bedding but when you drink as much as he is it’s got to go somewhere!! His bed is really really wet and I have tried everything. I’m now concerned about thrush... any tips on how to prevent it or magic potions and lotions?

Sorry it’s so long... any help or advice would be much appriciated!

Should also add he drinks in the field as well as the stable so it’s not a boredom thing!

I assume he is being tested for kidney function. Kidney failure isn't common in horses but an ex racer I had got it and used to drink a lot. I think you need to wait for the tests to come back, though I know it's hard to do that.

I would deep bed him meanwhile, not try to muck it out every day.

Vet is doing a “full scan” kidneys, liver etc etc and Cushings. I have also given a urine sample just to rule everything out! (Obviously his not mine ;)!!!)

He had £90 worth of wood pellets underneath 5 bales of shavings! Overnight he is so wet that it’s started to deep under the wall and into the tack room next door. I would t normally be worried but thrush has been crossing my mind!

Sadly I think with that level of water consumption, thrush is the least of your problems. Fingers crossed it's just Cushings.
