Hello. I own two Shetland ponies, a stallion and a gelding.
The stallion is really well trained, and is really friendly despite being a bit defiant at times.
However, I have recently purchased a 13.3 hands riding mare. As you can imagine, my stallion is very excited and behaving as you’d expect.
I don’t like leaving horses without companions, so I was hoping they could all sort things out and be friends. At 8 hands there’s no way he’ll impregnate her so breeding is not concern.
Does anyone have any advice about how I can calm him down? At 20 years old I doubt gelding him will do any good. I don’t won’t to spoil his temper but it would be a shame to separate them.
I used to keep a mare and a stallion together when I was much younger. (They didn’t bred for the same reason.) They were great friends so I know it’s possible.
