Very very worried. I have a 15hh, 6YO (could be 5) cob. he is bum high at present so used for hacking mainly. ridden about 3 times a week at the least. 4 at the most. I need advice what to ask the vets about and what to research and consider so need your expert help. this is what has happened........
horse spooked in stable (jumped when I cam around the door). there was an almighty bang as I presumed he slammed his legs down in shock.
came out the stable looking like his back, left leg was broken. wouldn't place it down. he walked this off though until he was sound in walk but bobbing slightly in trot. cold hosed it and put him back in his stable.
he is turned out in the field every day and was certainly sound enough to continue with this.
next day he walked out fine but looked lame in front in trot. 3/10ths I would say. then the back leg for a couple of strides looked awful then ok. put him back in his stable and cried then 1 hour later had another look with another friend. looked fine, only 1/10th off in trot. decided not to worry
yesterday sound in walk, trotted up 2/10 lame but looked like it was in front. trotted him back again and all of a sudden he did the god awful stride on his back left. decided I need to worry a lot. have not slept. lots of tears.
vet is coming tonight.
previous to this Herbs has been fine when ridden although I am seriously paranoid so the other day I thought he felt a bit off for 2 strides in trot but was then fine. the ride before that I actually got off because he sounded strange walking down the road. like he was dragging a back leg a tiny bit. it was scrapping on the road and sounded odd but he didn't feel lame. got back on and he was fine.
Physio has been and other than a tight hamstring on the left side he was fine.
vet muted that it sounded like a stifle issue but I have no experience of back end lameness but a lot of experience of vets just guessing.
what should I be looking for?
pushing my vet for?
conditions I should research?
I am having a nervous breakdown about this as I had to have my big lad Rocko put to sleep 4 months ago after untreatable ulcers, blown digital flexor and collateral ligament. he came in from the field lame in trot and was only 8. I was devastated. this little cob literally came into my life like a gift from a guardian angel. he is so wonderful I am so scared that this is all going to go wrong again. previous mare PTS 3 years ago after 2 years of constant lameness that was never resolved but thought to be infected pedal bones. I've too much experience with broken horses but not the back end! this is why some may think I am over reacting. I know that I am, I just have rather a lot of previous. lol
thank you in advance for your help. this forum has been a god send in the past xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
