My friend's father has recently passed away and she's been left with 3 horses and seven ponies to lok after. She doesn't really know what she's doing and asked me to come out and take a quick look at them. They all need their feet trimmed and wormed but one of them in particular worries me. She is very underweight for starters, one of her eye's is partly clouded over and she is covered in large hard lumps mostly on her torso.
One of her uncles explained the lumps were a result of a miscarriage bit I am doubtful given it was at least a year ago. I told her to get the vet out asap to look at the her but was wondering if anyone had any ideas?
 
Firstly does she intend keeping them baring in mind expense of feeding foot care and worming that many horses also the veterinary care they will need.
Getting a vet is important but could be an expensive route (I not saying it isn't necessary but it sounds like there is a lot to be done here).
I would contact WHW (I see you are Ireland is she ?). or maybe the equivalent of the RSPCA ( before anyone else does!.
They may be prepared to take some /all of them from her if she doesn't want them .They certainly should be able to advise on condition /needs of the horse/ponies.
This is a long term commitment and she needs expert help
Just my opinion.
 
I think its awful for people to end up in that sort of situation, 10 horses shoes or even just trims is expensive!! Plus if she doesn't know what shes doing even with best intentions they could end up in a bit of a mess (not everyones lucky enough to have other friends like you who know what there talking about for advice.) Not a clue what the lumps could be im sure a vet could tell her, or possibly even the farrier if he was to come up.
 
to be honest I don't know that she's up to keeping them - i've tried explaining to her the full extent of what's required but she hasn't taken it in. I really think she needs to hear it from a vet cos it comes across that she thinks i'm overexaggerating. I'm gonna try again today I know a good animal sanctuary not too far away that would probably take them but I'd like them to be in a fairly decent state before they would go.
