Hello, I would be really grateful if anyone can help. I am looking for the best way to supplement my dog with Curcumin (tumeric).

I took my dog (and best friend), Finn to the vet on Thursday as he had some raised lumps come up in his neck. We were referred to Cambridge Vet College on Monday for tests, and today we received the devastating results that he has Lymphoma. The Oncologist treating Finn said that Curcumin is said to be an effective supplement for dogs with cancer. I have trawled the internet and found plenty of info stating it's properties and research, but nothing which states the best way to feed it or at what dose?

If anyone has any experience with using Curcumin, or indeed with any other recommendations of supplements - I would be thankful.

I've spent the last few days in shock, despair and in an unbearable state preemptive grief. Finn began his Chemotherapy today, which marks the start of his fight - I owe him by best fight too.

Thank you in advance.

I also have no advice and want to wish you and Finn well, one thing I will say is Finn has no idea of the diagnosis, please do not grieve for him, make every day count and fingers crossed you get lucky. Good luck to you both. x

I cant help but might be worth googling in your area to see if there are people who specialise in natural medicines etc that you can talk to?

Speak to Cambridge vets they will be able to advise you. Or even your local vet- ours have given loads of advice on dosage of herbal supplements. I think you can prob add direct to feed or make a tea- some posts on here of giving to horses in a tea form.
Good luck to flin- as said above he doesn't no whats wrong don't grieve for him yet. I hope his treatment is a success

According to the Alternative american vets...... Tumeric

Preparation and dosage: powder can be mixed with water (1 teaspoon powder to one of water) as a paste for topical application. It can be added to food to tolerance to taste (1/4 to 1 teaspoon); or ground, macerated root, 1 tsp in water added to food (1/4-1/2 cup per 10 kg). Dog 50-250 mg curcumin tid. Tincture (1:2) 1.0-3.0 ml per 10kg.

Contra-indications: obstruction of the biliary tract, hypersensitivity to turmeric.

its Indian name: called "Haldi" and it can be obtained in health shops but quality and purity is an issue as it has become more popular as an alternative medicine.

Hope that helps :)

Good luck with your Finn.

Thank you very much everyone. I will get some and try him. I made him a cancer busting breakfast this morning, which I wasn't sure he would eat, as he has always been a fussy eater. But he did........ which has really cheered me :)

Dobiegirl - What you said is so true, and I hadn't thought of it like that. I will keep it in my head every time I want to scream! I will do all I can to make it count.

Great forum - seems a lovely community.
