Hi I have had this pony that has been gelded just over a year. He had previously been used for stud. He is 10 now and was cut as a 9 year old.
I'm now looking to purchase a young mare (4) do you think he will remember what he's done previously or should it all be out of his system now??
He's in a field with mares & geldings but separated by electric fencing purely because I font want him getting kicked etc as he is only 12hh and the other horses are 14+
he has never show any stallion tendancys since I've had him but I'm worried that he could damage the mare if I try them together etc
Any advise welcomed
Thsnks

Chances are he won't lose his desire to mate, though it will have been lessened (possibly) by being gelded. If you take his front shoes off, he can't do very much damage to the mares really - and besides, he won't mount mares unless they invite him to!

Depends on the horse to be honest. We had a 14 y/o stud in for breaking...he got cut and it was like he'd been a gelding his whole life.

Yet, had another 5 y/o who quietened in temperament but not in mind set around mares when turned out.

Hmmm.... not sure about the 'he wont mount mares unless they invite him to!' as we've a late gelded pony at our yard and he's persistently harrassing any horse within his reach. He's a mature individual now and was gelded a good while ago (15yrs+ ago) but his behaviour is still ridiculous - even now he's a geriatric! He must be sneaking Viagra, or something
But in all seriousness, it's not funny as he's in risk of being injured from persistently harrassing both mares and geldings and has injured a couple of horses he's broken in with.

Also, depending on his method of covering he may well injure a mare he tries to persistently mount. Covering can be a rough business (for both individuals participating) and it's not without its risks.

TBH, I would be reluctant to put a young mare in alone with this late-cut pony. Even though you say he's never shown any inclinations I still think it could be asking for trouble when she'll inevitably come into season and become a tease. Can you keep the new mare in with the horses the other side of the fence?

Hello, thank you all for your advise it's all very much appreciated. I too have made some progress today I managed to speak to the lady that used him for stud, turns out he only covered two mares... I don't really know if that makes a difference? It's not as if he was taken to mares on a regular basis! She said he was a very good pony never bargy and good manors etc she doesn't think I'll have too much of a problem integrating him back into being in a group etc

In an ideal world it would be nice if he could be with the mare but I can always separate with electric fencing, they can still be together without having to rub bums!!
The pony is bare foot so that's
one less thing to worry about.

I've seen themating process and it was a little rough hence the reason I asked the question as I don't want the mare hurt in any way.
I think I'll let them be in a paddock together separated by the electric fencing and see how it goes?? My old mare is not at all flirty (she's 34 now) but I've had mares that are a real tease so I guess I need to sus her out too!

Thank you again x

?

Yes, but, seriously, if a stallion/gelding is in any doubt about being double barrelled,he's not got much chance of actually raping a mare

Again grow up! Unless you can offer genuine advise. People like you reuine forums like this. May i suggest you go to cbbc you can play childish games there, you can play with my children!

Crikey! I'm with Moomin, except I'm just gonna stay in the audience! :):)

Sorry OP, couldn't help but chuckle. I hope your two settle happily together and for what it's worth a line of electric between them to start seems like a very sensible idea. :) x

Christ alive!

Merry Crisis, we can't be expected to know everything! Besides, do you know that OP is English? For all we know, she might not be originally. Secondly, correct me if I am wrong, but is 'ad lib' not in fact Latin?

Lol, Merry Crisis. Yes I believe I speak very good English, and surprisingly even studied Latin at school :) mine was one of the few schools who continued to teach it well into the late 1990s and possibly beyond.

:) x

Ok just read the ad lib thread so now I get it.
MC, I think you will find ad lib is two words not one.
I doubt there are many 5 year olds familiar with the term.
Maybe your not as clever as you think, just thoroughly unpleasant.

I had never come across the phrase 'ad lib' until I started using forums. Once I'd noticed the word popping up on posts, I Googled it and it's now part of my horse vocabulary!

Surely that's the purpose of these websites? To share experiences and knowledge? (And to nitpick on people's spelling, of course!)

Bleddy hell Merry Crisis you need to go see the doctor, your PMT is very bad this fine evening.. stop being so obnoxious!

Am I missing something here ?

At least half the thread reading it at this time... Definitely confusing...

OP, I hope you're able to get them settled and agree, a fence line to keep them apart at least initially so you can see how they all act with each other sounds a good idea... :)

Thankfully I read the other thread so realised what was going on here. Can't find it now though so presume it's been pulled. Anyone coming in now is going to think they have gone barmy. As I did reading this one before the other.
OP, maybe we can now return to your sensible request for advice. You have had some good ideas suggested from 'normal' members. Good luck, and let us know how it all goes.

Not positive it's been pulled. Maybe I didn't look properly while trying to drink tea and get wellies on. I hope it hasn't actually. It would be a good reminder how vile some people can be. Those comments were 100% unnecessary. OP said absolutely nothing to provoke them.

Yes, its been moved to soapbox.

Other people wading in to say that we were as bad as MC! Unbelievable.

I was inadvertently 'guilty' of doing something similar having hit reply, then answered the phone before posting... My 'have a go' post at someone I perceived to be in the wrong was just one of many - that multiple response reaction was highlighted by another member as being unnecessary...

They were correct IMO...
