Hello,

Looking for advice on my young horse and hock injuries. My horse a year ago got a kick to the point of hock and deep cut. It was unable to be stitched but was bandaged regularly by the vet. Was 1/2 10ths lame at the time. Had joint taps which were all clear and was also scanned there was some slight ‘rough patch’ on the scan but tendons all good and in tact. While being bandaged by the vet he also suffered a serious pressure sore down to the bone on the point of his tibia bone on the inside of his leg, he had to operated on to smooth over where the bone damage was. This all healed well, he has a capped hock now and a slighted larger area where the pressure sore but he’s happy on the leg and is sound.

I have recently backed him I did a month of walking and long reining him out and am now hacking him. I have magnetic hock boots I put on for 30 mins every other day and have him in a joint supplement.

I was wondering if anyone has ever had such an injury before and how likely it would be that he can have a competitive career. He’s bred to jump but Im hoping he’ll be more or a super all rounder for me. He appears happy on the leg and even kindly popped over a 5 bar gate a few weeks ago to give me a heart attack. He does struggle walking down hill if it’s steep wants to trot but I don’t know if that’s him struggling or just a wobbly baby. He’s a 4 year old warmblood. Planning on just doing lots of straight lines hacking with lots of breaks and holiday and get him strong. No nasty messages just advice and other people’s experiences please.

I wouldn’t worry too much sounds more like it was skin wounds rather than ligaments and tendons so likely hood your horse will be good to go especially if he’s sound and happy! Going down hill - it’s likely he’s finding it easier to rush on his forehand than carrying his weight behind and he’s only 4 with a lot of maturing to do! Easier said than done but just enjoy him and don’t worry or overthink 😀
