Don't know if it because it's Halloween, but out hunting today, Badger had the most terrible attitude towards every other horse other than his best bud and stable mate Caffrey.

He pulls the most horrible faces and tries to bite them, and then he struck out with his front leg at a tiny little pony and caught his little nose!!

He has always been a bit like this but he seems to be getting worse and worse with age.

He also has gone for my dad horse a couple of times while out riding. He is a real big bully!!

What do I do?? I don't normally carry a stick but i'm starting to think he needs a bit of a bashing for this - it's getting dangerous really, he could have really hurt the pony - or even worse the child on it!!

What do you think??

Thanks.... He is really naughty... do you think a smack on the shoulder would do or more is needed?? I keep giving him various slaps round the neck but I think it hurts my hand much more than him!

Sorry, I'm a bit soft with him - can you tell?

tbh i'd give him a good jerk with the rein the moment he thought an evil thought, to give him something more important to think about!
having seen a friend's knee smashed out hunting when another horse took a dislike to hers...

Yea I normally give him a bit of a pull and a kick and it sorts him out, but he has been a lot worse that usual today.

He is worse with ponies, I don't *think* he would ever kick out with his back feet but this little rear-strike out thing today was new, it's like he thinks he's a stallion protecting his mares or something!

Carry a whip with a leather flap at the end and give him a good strong smack when he behaves in this dangerous way. You may think it's cute...but it isn't you he's endangering.

Oh, and try to smack him closest to the offending body part - so on the shoulder for a strike, on the ass for a kick...but ensure that no one is in the firing line as you smack as he may kick against the whip initially.

I don't think it is cute!! It's doing nothing for our popularity and no one is offering me a drink form their flask though fear!!

He's never kicked out, and I would beat the cr*p out of him if he did!! I agree about the offending body part but the main thing is his biting and I'm a bit dubious about bashing him round the head??

umm, "He's never kicked out"... i bet the tiny pony that got caught on the nose might not agree with you.
the next time he threatens to do it, i'd give him a few very very hard smacks, before he does some serious damage to a horse/pony/rider/your popularity...!

Yea sorry, I meant with his back end. I don't know if he actually got him, there weren't any marks and he didn't seem too bothered, but thats not the point is it!

Naughty Badger!!! Little ponies little rider said a few seconds later "Well I forgive you Sarah but I don't forgive your stupid horse!!

I'm not advocating bashing him about the head with a whip - but keep him on a short rein and smack him (hard, not just a coy flick) on the neck if he goes to bite another horse or human. And I agree with Kerilli - being struck is the same as being kicked. I'm sorry to sound mean - but this isn't the horse's fault; it's yours and you shouldn't endanger others til you sort it out.
