Went to Hartpury yesterday and was very impressed by the standards of turnout. Particularly some of the horses had plaits that looked like little rose buds. They seemed quite wide so quite a lot of mane but just went into this neat little bud. Does any one know what I mean or how to achieve this look? The Eilberg's horses were particularly good but short of hunting down their groom I dont know how to find out??

I find wetting the mane slightly (using just bog standard water) helps grip the hair to plait it.

Then when plaited (so tight my fingers hurt!) I sew them in. Attach the thread to the end of the plait (by looping it round a bit and through etc) then through the base of the plait.
Then sew the thread up and down along the now once folded over plait. Then back through the base to fold it under once more, and this should achieve a nice rounded neat plait.

then just sew in so it stays.

Then hairspray to maintain it!

Also if they are teeny tiny plaits you saw, its cause the horses mane is now very long or is really REALLY thin!

are there showing peeps in competition forum (dont go in much so dont know)

if this is a particular style of plait they might know it, i used to be on a showing forum and the range of types and styles of plait they know is mind boggling

(as she taught me!)

they turn out fab!

I use strong hold spray gel on dry mane, one section at a time. Spray the mane top and bottom so it is pretty soaked, comb it through, leave for a few seconds so it gets tacky, then plait. I do my plaits as explained above.

My horses still have curly manes for days after the plaits come out!
