I am looking to getting another horse this year after selling my 14.2 Connemara 2 years ago, I’ve been trying to think what I want / what would be the ideal horse for me and I think I need some advise!

I have not ridden regularly for the last 2 years but previous to that I would say I was around BHS stage 4 (?) ability... XC schooling, local SJ shows, basic lateral movements in the school etc etc ...

because I worked with horses I never really had the time to do my own thing with my mare, I groomed for the owner of the yard at events etc but never got the chance to experience this for myself..

Basically I want to start doing some small events, learn and progress in all spheres and generally do well and have fun with my horse.

Should I look at getting a horse that has been there and done it or a younger horse (obviously with the help of an instructor ) so that we learn and progress together ?

( I do have some experience helping to school young horses )

What would be your advice on what sort of horse to look at?

I am 23yrs old, 5.5” and 9.5 stone.

Thanks!

I would say you need an all rounder, and maybe look at 7 year old. At they age, they should have been out and done a bit of copetitions etc, and will know the basics, but still younger enough to bring on.
Do you like riding small or big horses? Maybe a 15.2 small hunter type? IrishxTB are normally good, as you have the hardiness of the hunter but the speed of a TB.

I will happily go do some horsey shopping for you if you tell me exactly what you want and how far you can travel... and of course, your budget!! :D

Im 21 and your dap/riding ability, ive got a 16hh irish sport horse, who is now 14 owned him since he was 8. And my new 6yr old KWPN. The ISH is awesome to ride and a very decent stamp. (kwpn is very sharp and green where bringing him on) Depending on your budget but i paid £2500 for the irish one who had BSJA winnings etc, so that should give you an idea on prices different postcodes will fluctuate slightly though. Good luck, its very exciting buying a new horse!

Really depends on what type of horse you like and what type of budget you have. At your size you can get away with anything you like really! I have a young horse that I've broken in myself and he is frustrating and rewarding in equal measures. It depends what you want to gain from the horse; do you want to bring on a baby or do you just want to chill out, go out and do immediately. I have to admit, if I'd had a bigger budget and knowing what I know now I might have gone for the latter option (even though I love my boy to bits!).

Again, horse type depends on what you like. Like I said you can get away with anything from an Exmoor to a Warmblood!
