can anyone tell me about 'spurs' coming off an artritic bone please - do they go away or get worse or stay the same - do they 'form' as in a splint and then ease the problem. Thanks guys x x

As far as I'm aware the spurs form on the end of the bone, well they were on the xrays of Pidge's hock and it is only while they are forming that they cause problems.

When my boy got them ( he had them in his coffin joints ) it meant that he was unable to flex the joint properly as the spur was blocking the movement. They will not go away and I think that they progress with time. Best to speak to your vet for proper advice though.

bone spurs, or osteophytes, form on the bony edges of joints with osteoarthritis (OA). In an OA joint the cartilage is degraded and so bone meets bone - this causes pain. In an effort to help, the bones grows outwards on the joint margins to increase the joint area thereby reducing pressure (pressure = force/area). These bony growths also decrease mobility. They do not disappear but can stabalise. Ultimately though they are a sign of joint degeneration and as this progresses they can also enlarge.
The problem is of us that they can cause pain and restrict movement. They are often used as a measure of the amount of cartilage degeneration present.
The amount of issue they cause differs depending on which joint is affected (pastern or hock has a better outcome than fetlock for instance). I'd talk to your vet for advice (or a lameness specialist).
