something went amiss in our field this morning. my friend arrived to find the elec fencing had been pulled down and dragged across the field and my boy was hobbling around. i've had a good look at him after worrying myself stupid all day stuck at work. he seems to have pulled his fetlock. its slightly puffy, no heat, but he didnt want it touched to start with, altho he is the ultimate wimp. and is definitely lame in trot and wants to rest that leg when standing. would appreciate some advise pls. never had him lame before. he lives out 24/7 with no access to stable. my friend put him on his own in a small paddock for the day and i've jst put him back in the main field for the night.

If you think its just a tweak, cold hose and bute would be my advice. Keep moving is the usual advice for a strain or sprain. If in doubt ring the vet for a chat.
What would you do if you had a serious injury and needed to bring him in? I'm not trying to get at you but I do think that you need to be prepared for all eventualities,even when your horse lives out.
 
I would hose him for a couple of days leave the hose on him for a good 10-15 minutes. He's prob just pulled something. I would prob leave him in the small paddock if poss or minimise chances of him hooning around. He should start to get better over next few days if he gets worse or becomes non weight baring then I'd get the vet. Hose him as many times as you can throughout the day. I tend not to bute tbh unless vet says or unless you know what's happened etc as it can hide symptoms I would rather see what's going on.
 
Hi I totally agree with Nash2 as using bute without veterinary advise can mask the problem, pony feels better and tries to do too much, bute wears off and pony is in a worse state ,best to hose as mentioned and seek vets help if not getting better, hope he's better soon
 
after yesterday, my pony seems fine today. quite happy to put weight on foot and no longer lame. i've given him today off jst to be sure, but do you think it ok to ride tomorrow? i'll just do a slow walking ride.
 
i think just gentle walking will be fine, i would cold hose after wards though just to keep any swelling or heat down.
