A very local venue has a qualifier on next friday. They are running two prelim classes. I am not affiliated but would like to enter as it is so close.

From what I can understand I can just enter in the open section or i can buy a day ticket and do the restricted section. Is that right? Can i enter both without day tickets as an open competitor?

Would I get a better picture of how she compares to other prelim horses by buying a day ticket and entering the restricted class?

What would be the best thing to do? It is so close I can post the entries through the door!

Dont care where I come tbh! Ok I will cry if I am last but hey ho someone has to!

Also if it is run under affiliated rules will I need a bridle number?

You will need a bridle number , they usually run the open and restricted with one judge [ but not always] Your horse doesn't need to be registered but you need to be or as you say use a day ticket for each class. If you intend doing more it may be cheaper for you to join and then if you do well you will Qualify [ tickets get prizes but don't qualify.]
Good luck

Surely if you are not affiliated, then you dont have any points at all on the horse, so you would be in the restricted section.
Yes you will need to be on a ticket, unless of course they are taking Unaffiliated entries. Some centres do that to make the classes larger.
Ring them and ask.

Hi

Just re read the rules, you can do the open section of prelim without a ticket or neither yourself or horse being registered. ~You can buy a ticket for £6 if you wish to enter novice or above which entitles you to win rosette and prize money if placed but you will not get points.

Why not just have a go at prelim, at least you will get a decent judge and it will only cost you the entry fee and will give you some experience before you have the outlay of joining

Yes you can

But I believe this only applies to prelim.

Don't waste your money buying class tickets just for a try-out at prelim as I did

No one corrected me but at least I got some magazines out of it!

You'll still be able to see how she compares to the other horses as both O and R sections will be judged by the same judge.

I hope BD wont mind me printing this.

This is from the website.

Have a go before joining BD

Many people are unaware that you don’t need to be a British Dressage (BD) member to enter the open section of preliminary classes at affiliated dressage competitions. However, we do hope you will join us and enjoy the many benefits our membership offers. You will need to join if you would like to take part in a preliminary restricted qualifier, which is a class through which you can qualify for a championship.

The other way you can try BD competitions before joining is through class tickets. By buying a class ticket for £6, you can enter one BD class without being a member or having a registered horse. You can win rosettes and prize money, but will not receive BD points or qualifications, except for Petplan Equine Area Festivals.

I think I have interpreted it correctly, it doesnt say anything about the horse having to be registered, (which she isn't) but think I may be better doing one restricted class on a ticket and one open as I cant do two on a ticket.

I really want to get an idea of whether she could do it or not!

Well I know she can do it, but I like to do well! Dont want to go and affiliate if i am going to make a complete a**e of myself!

restricted and open at prelim works completely differently to novice and above and i wish they hadn't changed it from section A and B as it just confuses people.

open is open to non-members on non-registered horses. restricted is open to member of BD (no ticket required) or non-member riding on a day ticket. The horse doesn't need to be registered unless you qualify for area festivals or regionals.

generally same judge for open and restricted sections, same as at novice and above so you will be judged the same whatever section you're in and can see how your scores would compare by checking the score board. no need to pay for a ticket. just enter the open section.

You can compete in the Open section of a prelim without registering the horse or being a member of BD, my friend comes along with me and sge does just that.

To enter the restricted section(i.e. the qualifier) you need to be a member of BD but the horse does not until you actually qualify. No day tickets are required.
