Does anyone know any websites or places that sell cheap/affordable show jumps? We really need some new show jumps but everywhere I've looked its been around £70 for a wing, £30 for a pole and £300 for a full jump. I just really don't want to spend this much money when I know they will probably get broken or damaged within a few months. :(

Making your own jumps is the way to go. If you look at the link above making jump stands rather than wings uses considerable less wood. Don't be tempted to use wood other than tanalised (treated against rot) & never use pallet wood because it soaks up water like a sponge. You can buy treated poles from many places but don't waste your time buying 12' or even 10' as they are costly & bigger than you need. Buy 8' poles they are much cheaper. Planks are easy to make, just buy scaffold planks, they normally come at around 13' long. I bough 4 & cut them into 2 x 8' long & 2 x 5' long. You can drill the ends & tap in a piece of threaded rod which can rest on the cups. Ebay are a reasonable cheap place to buy cups. You will have to spend some money buy you can get a lot for your money f you make them yourself. I made mine 7+ years ago & they're still being used.

This is a link to jump wings that are cheap to buy, even cheaper to make & you can make them as high as you want.

Ditto make your own, local agricultural merchants will stock 4"x2 "(100x50 mm) for wing outer uprights and 3"x1"(75x25mm) as top and bottoms and centre uprights and 4x2 (100x50 ) as base rails for the wings and 4" (100mm) round rails as poles they will all be pressure treated and last for years.

I am slightly wary of home made jumps. I've seen a number break when fallen into and injure the rider. Absolutely it is perfectly possible to make your own - and if you are reasonably competent you can do so safely. But they do rot much quicker than something professionally made and plastic coated. I would be even more cautious about home made jumps sold on palces like ebay - at least if you do them yourself you know the standard of the timber, joints etc.

For cheaper plastic coated jumps try second hand on ebay - a bit hit and miss as they are impossible to post so end up pick up only.

Jumps on line do budget courses which are quite affordable - £350 for a 3 jump starter set. You can add in extras as you can afford them. Jump stands are cheaper than full wings - and actually easier to use in a small arena as you can use one strand with 2 different jumps coming off it. You could buy plastic coated stands then unpainted wood poles to paint yourself - but bear in mind they will splinter and eventually break over time.

I bought a set of 5 from ebay. Very cheap, have not broken, happy customer.

My arena is only small and if I jump bigger we hire out, so at home I have 4ft wings and 10ft poles. It makes it easier to fit in a small space and was cheaper too.

Another vote for making your own. With a wide range of coloured wood paints/stains that dry quickly you don't have the hassle of waiting days for paint to dry. I have quite a few home made stands that are 10+ years old.
