my mare finally has her bandage off!!!!

And the first thing the poor girl did was have a roll and a lie down. She has had a huge Robert Jones bandage and splint on her hind leg as she fractured 2 bones in her hock in July. The last 3 weeks the splints are off and I've gradually been reducing the bandage until today when it's all come off. I don't even want to think about how much I've spent on cotton wool, gauze, gamgee, vetwraps, pro wraps, flexoplasts and duct tape!!!! Just to give you an idea, the first time they put the bandage on in the vet hospital they used 100 euro worth of cotton wool!!!

Since then she's had to get the bandage changed about every 10 days and each time used, on average, 2 rolls of cotton wool, 3 prowraps, a roll of gamgee, 2 rolls of gauze, 2 flexoplasts and half a roll of duct tape.

She has a horrible pressure sore as when she was in the vet hospital 3 weeks ago they put the bandage back on and left flexoplast (the really sticky elastic bandage) stuck to her skin

. It wouldn't come off and when it finally did it left a huge sore which was then rubbed by the bandage.

I'm pretty p****d off to be honest, as is my vet, because we were so careful to avoid sores and only ever used flexoplast at the end to hold the bandage together. The vet hospital did look after her very well but it is a teaching hospital so I think they let some useless intern or student do the last bandage. My bandaging was a lot better!!!!

Anyway hopefully she'll only be on a few more weeks box rest and then she can go out!!! It's been a long haul but I think the end is in sight!!
