My TB is dropping off slightly with the change in seasons, this is the first year he's not really picked up enough with his usual hard feeds so I'm thinking of adding something else just to help keep weight on - he's currently on a day (split between 2 feeds), 2 cups of linseed, 1 scoop of Alpha A molasses free and 1 scoop of Alphabeet - he's in daily light work (lunging/hacking) and has recently had his back shoes off so something that not sugary/starchy to give him would be ideal - does anyone have any suggestions? He's out 24/7 with free access to his stable, is on grazing but would say nutritionally isnt great, has a large haynet in the morning in the field and I leave him with another 2/3 sections in the field to graze on along with a fibre block.

I would give him a lot more of what you are giving him now. or just up the linseed to 3 mugs a day { I gather you are using teacups now}

Not quite teacups, a kids plastic cup but measures out to 200g a day he's getting in total. I'd rather not give him bigger feeds as he won't eat it so upping the lindseed is an idea, increase to 300-400g a day do you think?

I feed about 500g linseed a day to my girl ontop of her ERS and C&C is really helping her!

Wow ok, maybe im under feeding the linseed, will increase that and see how we get on. I've heard mixed reviews about how well horses have done on C&C, every horse is different though I guess is it a barefoot friendly feed?

My skinny pin tb had a bad reaction to protexin and dropped about 30kg so trying to build her up before winter really hits! It's only one big mug per feed!
Yeah I've heard C&C doesn't work for all but I've found it good, and yes barefoot for a year now!

Thanks dianchi, will maybe consider C&C if the increase in linseed doesn't work. On a seperate note have you tried hoof boots on your tb when making the transition? Mines only had his backs off but is really footy on stony tracks but is going well in the fields, turnout and Tarmac roads. I've invested in some cavallos (which he's not yet worn) and keratex hoof hardener. Any other recommendations you can give for helping with soreness etc?

I'm a year in with her fronts off, and now 4 yrs with her backs off, I never went down boot route as I didn't find she needed them

my adv bf dr horse gets in his 4 feeds daily-

2 mugs linseed micronised
soaked whole oats- atm 3 small scoops
corn oil
fast fibre as a binder and for taste- hes fussy!
copra

hooves rock crunching and weight ok. he cannot tolerate alfalfa very well at all.

Coolstance Copra has worked wonders on my boy, and it's very barefoot friendly. It's a bit 'Marmite' though, they either seem to love it or hate it!
