...on the other thread about whether the dogs were looking a bit porky or not, I took Ricoh to the vets today for his annual booster and was told in no uncertain terms that he was 'terribly thin', 'look, I can feel his spine' and that she would like to see 'several kilos' on him.

FWIW he weighs 24kg which did surprise me a little as Dax is 26kg but she is a little too well covered, I think. Both are 24" tall. Cue lots of disparaging comments about 'well, I suppose they keep racing dogs stick-thin, don't they?' which made me LOL as neither is yet a racing dog of any description.

Just a whinge, don't mind me...

Do you know I was thinking the same about Darcy but the vet assures me due to muscle she is fighting fit.(Not that she fights).:D But after the deer carcase debacle she and Diesel dropped weight (I starved them for 24hours &n on rice for 48hours). I think with my two being so fit and not carrying a lot of weight an episode like that can make them look thinner.

I know what your vet is saying in that the scales dont lie but its early days for your dog and if you are worried just up her feed.

Umm can you not fell most dogs spines??? or am I being newbie owner dumb (and also starving my dog!!!)

Incidentally my Vet said it was very refreshing to be able to see a dogs ribs (just) when she met Dex...... going to have to measure him now.....

That's what confused me as well, she said his ribs were fine but she could feel his spine and hips, how she expects me to put fat on his spine and hips without further covering the ribs is beyond me. :p

BC, I'd completely missed the fact that you got another dog. Clearly it happened whilst I was in revision/exam hell. Tell me more, tell me more :)

There is probably a specialist "spine fattening" diet if you google hard enough LOL

Prescription only, of course, at an extortionate price! :p :D

He's from the Siberian Husky Welfare Association, six months older than Dax, a spotty piebald monster who runs like a drunken giraffe and is a bugger for stealing food. She loves him to pieces, can leave them alone for as long as I need to, no real ishoos. :)

What? your vets did not stock "spine fattener"- at £98 per 100g???

Yup - commonly known as Pro-plan or Hills Science Plan

My vet says that most people are used to seeing fat unfit dogs and mine are how fit dogs should look thankfully.

From what i've seen on here of yours they look fab - plus you run their socks off so they should be on the lean side :)

Feeling a little more confident about my stance today, went to visit grandma dearest last night - their vet says this dog isn't fat...

He's like a stuffed cushion with a leg at each corner. Thoroughly unpleasant creature, too.

Wow, looks just like OH's brother's dog, like a little JRT balloon on legs with a little head stuck on top. I have just removed his collar as I couldn't put two fingers underneath it and it must have been digging into him for weeks, there is a big mark around his neck :(
