After all the scare stories - how much are you paying for hay

Well my OH is a Feed Merchant and WE can`t buy (good quality) hay for less than £6 per bale, thats before we add on the usual costs (labour, profit etc...) so we are not stocking it this year, simple as that.

Our local feed merchants sell hay for £3 a bale. I've been buying big bale haylage for £20 a round bale which is no more expensive than last year.

I buy straight from the YO. I was using small bale meadow hay but wasnt teh best quality and is £3.00 a bale am now buying half a large square bale of Rye Hay at £15.00 which is roughly the same quantity as 5 small bales apparently though not convinced by this as yet seem to have gone through quite a lot already

But my mare actually eats this hay infact wolfs it down! And is so much better as much less dusty so dont have to spend hours faffing around with soaking and draining hay

Same as normal but am on big bales made last year; this years isn't so good, the farmer says. However I've just tried his big bale haylage which is lovely stuff; really horse quality, they prefer it to the hay- a bale lasts longer & its cheaper, as he costs it as if it was for cattle (???!)

Big bale haylage which we have in 50 bale loads delivered and stacked at £20 per bale which is the same as last year.
The hay we have is top quality seed hay at £3 per bale also same price as last year and the bales are massive one of our hay bales contains twice as much hay as my parents bales so think its a good deal at £3!
