hi i have had a 10 weeks of hell getting my colts back legs up to pick out. i can brush is legs trim his feathers and hes fine ask him to pick his back legs up he creates. i have not been feeding him tip bits out the hand as he was nippy when he arrived so have been rewarding with a fuss and belly scratch. today i decided to try a tipbit (carrot). i lifted the back leg for half a second then i put it down and gave him a piece of carrot. and that was it he was willing everytime to pick his foot up and hold it there till i was ready to put it down. just hope we are looking forward now. fingers crossed:D

Well done you, it's a great feeling when the penny finally drops with them isn't it :) And that's baby cobs for you, can be bribed to do pretty much anything for food! :D

I taught my horse to pick his feet up in rotation. Start with near fore, then near hind, off hind, off fore. Now as soon as I have picked out his near fore & replaced it he has his near hind already picked up for me. Then he picks up his off hind and then his off fore. then he gets his reward. Same with his bit. I present him with the bit & he opens his mouth & takes it, then he gets his mint. I once was on a child psychology course when the tutor said "find out what the child is prepared to 'work' for & when child has done the 'work' give child their reward". Bribery works wonders! & often gets quick results!
