What methods do you all use when abscess has fully drained and you're just left with the hole to keep clean ... how long do you leave still wrapped up when going out? What do you all use??
I usually dry 'poultice' for a day or 2 to allow the hoof to re-harden as the hot poulticing does soften them. Then just stuff the hole with cotton wool, it stays in surprisingly well
But how long would you keep the area covered for (i.e in terms of turning out)? Im thinking of filling with Keratex during the day whilst out then just taking it out/bandage at night to keep wee out?
I stop bandaging after its dried up (1-2 days max) and then stuff with cotton wool. Honestly it does stay in and form a barrier to mud etc.
My horse, since having cushings/laminitis has had a never ending stream of abscesses in all 4 feet and its one thing I REALLY know how to treat (wish I didn't, I'm reaching the end of my teather with it). I'm waiting for the farrier now as I reckon she's got another in one of her hinds. Last time it was a fore....)
Well in that case, cotton wool it is ... will scoop out his keratex later and replace with cotton wool ...
Its only a tiny hole in the 'toe' of his hind hoof but actually bled a little when vet removed the 'debris' (he has very thin soles) vet cut out on 15th (Monday) so hot poulticed for a few days - the morning of 17th (Wed) was completely clear of anything coming out although to be fair it wasnt much of a 'smelly infection' it was more a lump of dirt he removed so surely it'll have hardened by now??
Yes I reckon it should be fine now to just cotton wool it. Make sure you shove it in hard and kind of flatten it. Don't worry about the blood, the last time my farrier dug out my horses foot to find one the same thing happened...
