HI all, don't know if you saw my post last night basically took Jasper out on a new path hacking and he spooked, spun and bucked like a wild one leaving me no option but to fall off and hit a fence! My arm is bruised and leg battered but I'm ok. He's been spooky before but never that violent with it. I've been schooling him mostly, only hacking I've been doing is to my dressage lessons on a Sunday and he's good for that. Here's my question really:
Should I get back on him tonight and try new path again even though I'm slightly battered?
or Should I just wait until Sunday's lesson to get back on board? I could lunge him tonight? I've never fallen off him before and I'm worried this will be the start of something slightly scary

Yep, I'm with Weezy on this one - if it were me & I could still physically ride I'd be back on board this evening...

Maybe ride him but don't take him down the new path? As its the first time you've fallen off him don't let yourself become nervous of it otherwise this is all you will think everytime you come to ride him! Get back on tonight if you are ok to ride and take him somewhere you know he is used to. You could go with company if you can and then after you have been out again and he's been fine then take him down the new path, again in company if possible??

Definitely get back on - if you can't face a hack then at least ride in a school/field for a short time. The longer you leave it, the harder it will be. You'll be fine!

Would you go down the same track or different way and what to do if he starts spinning and taking off? Could I go with someone else or would this be pointless?

Karen, I would go with whatever makes you feel happiest and most confident. If there is someone else who can go with you then great. If you feel uneasy going down the same track this time, then go another way for now and return to it once you've had one good ride. Is there someone more experienced who could accompany you and perhaps take him over for a bit if he does start a-----g around?

Yes, so long as your physically ok to ride, get back on take the bull by the horns again....get a bit of fighting spirit in ya tell your horse when you get on ''I aint taking no sh*t of you tonight!''....or something to that description

as the Nike advert always said 'just do it!'

get back on, but I would go elsewhere if i thought I wasn't going to be confident enough to fully address the situ yet.

And plan for someone to be with me for moral support when tackling that path again

If you don't feel confident to go the same route again on your own then perhaps go in company or even see if someone would go on foot with you to give you that extra bit of confidence?
I think it's important to take him the same route again, if not tonight then soon, & let him see you're not going to take any crap from him - tho if he's genuinely nervous then a more softly, softly approach might be wise!
Just try to remember that horses pick up on your nerves so if you're both nervous on that track then going in company might be the best option until you feel confident to tackle it alone.

Ok thanks everyone, I'm actually quite nervous which I didn't think I would be! I think I'll go a different way but past the track, will enlist help of OH and our labrador!

Hi
get back on girl, this has been happening to me, so I know how you feel, just go some other route, otherwise when you get to where it happened you might be a bit tensed up!!

I'd go back out, the same path and make him do, no pissing about! The longer you leave it the more difficult it will be to overcome, maybe if its knocked you abit go out with someone else on a good hacker that could lead the way past the scary monsters? xx

Hope it all goes OK for you tonight. I would absolutely get back on, as the others have said, the longer you leave it, the worse it gets, but don't do anything too taxing. Have you got a school or a small field in which you could just have a quiet pootle around?

Thanks for your support everyone, this has really given me a boost. I will just go to the end of the lane and back tonight with the OH and labrador as I am hurting quite a bit and could do with a rest TBH! At least this should help make him realise I'm still going to ride him even if he's bucked me off! I've got a lesson Sunday so want to go to it feeling a bit more confident! Thanks again everyone!

Speaking from experience, get on when you are ready and feel confident you can ride adequately - no good if your arm isnt working properly in case anything unexpected happened and perhaps do a short ride, whether it is in the school or hacking down the track, keeping it short but positive. End on a positive note and you will feel fab.
