After rosie's past post..is headshaking a new thing?

Rosie's post got me thinking about mollycoddled horses and how certain things seem more prevalent these days. I have only been aware of head shaking over the past few years - as my TB does it.
Is it something which was commonly seen decades ago? And if it was, would it have been generally put down to ill fitting tack or something along those lines?
Or have horse become more sensitive through breeding and the general mollycoddling they receive nowadays?

Obviously im not as experienced as most on here, but from what ive seen up here, surrounded by herds of gypsy horses, they seem to fare better just chucked out all year in a feild, and they arent just the typical heavy cobs either. one of the herds has some tb crosses with foals and have literally done it all themselves and outside, wheras my friends ex racer cant go two weeks without being lame or having a problem.

theres surely got to be something in that.
