Hello,

After the post below i'm curious to see what more knowlegable people think about the pedigree of our TB's and what their pedigrees could mean in terms of their use as sports horses?

I also would be interested to hear from others who have horses related to ours and if they are alike at all?

First is my horse. Here is his pedigree:-

http://www.pedigreequery.com/hi+hopes

He's a laidback, happy chap. Straightforward and likes to work. He never stops at his jumps, always performs his best and is the sort who wont let you down. I cant wait to event him as he has been pretty consistent at everything in his training :)

Video to give you an idea:-

Here is my mum's horse pedigree:-

http://www.pedigreequery.com/venice+road

He's also a straightforward horse, a little bit more stressy then mine he doesn't like being left alone ect but he's easy to ride. He excels dressage and showing, he has a beautiful round jump but he gets bored if he jumps too much. He loves jumping if you keep it short and sweet but over-train over jumps and he becomes really hard work. He can also be a bit looky with fillers ect if he hasnt jumped for a while, he is genuine though just not sure he would be happy with a purely jumping job :)

Video of my mums horse warming up at dressage:-

Here is my late mares pedigree:-

http://www.pedigreequery.com/vayamos3

She was a tricky dicky to handle and could be very stressy. However she was genuine to ride, had a massive jump and also gave her best. She wouldn't stop at jumps either and she enjoyed competing and would give her all. She had to be pts with colic caused by early worm damage (from a foal) that caused her digestive system to fail :(. Such a shame.

Here she is as a baby jumping:-

What do you think of them? Any thoughts?? Interesting facts on their pedigrees?

He is very well connected as he is distantly related to my boy who has Miswaki in his pedigree as well, albeit three generations back.

I have been told of a couple of stallions to steer clear of but generally I don't look at the pedigree just whether I like the horse and can afford him!

My ex racer had Northern Dancer bloodlines and sounds pretty much like your first one you've described, apart from that he was nappy xc and hacking but i think that has more to do with how he was broke etc
Im usless with breeding but the first two have northern dancer in there lines 2/3 times, is that not like interbreeding? Probably a numpty question sorry :D

I'm pretty clueless about TB bloodlines, so can't really comment on the pedigrees. My pony's related to your late mare though - same grandsire (bob back). Mine can be a bit of a stressle-head at times too, he finds competing VERY exciting , he's pretty honest and athletic jumping, but needs to understand the question & will run out if he doesn't "get it".

Your horses are lovely btw :)

Your mare was a textbook ob's return. They can be right stressheads and everything is incredibly difficult for their brains to comprehend until they hit about 6/7 and suddenly it all falls into place. He throws fabulous jumpers but they are slow to mature and wouldn't be the soundest horses in the world. They can be difficult to keep rightbut have a massive heart and when they figure out its all fun they will give you everything they have. We have a cool wee horse by bob's return. He is about 15.2hh, thinks he's 17hh, loves racing but hasn't always stayed sound and as a youngster tended to think he could fly. He'd wing fences but tend to try and jump on longer and longer shots...but being 15.2 he tended to go splat eventually or unship his jockeys and continue alone. He is now 8 and has suddenly grown up....really works well, touch wood has stayed sound all season and has learnt to chip in instead of trying to fly into space. Still hasn't lost his party trick of whipping round real quick....tends to wait till you are least expecting it and dump you for fun. OH was sitting on him chatting to someone and percy decided it was time to go home so after standing still chilled and nibbling grass for ten mins, he spun round from nowhere, dumped oh and trotted off home. Sorry I've rambled on there....I do love the bob's returns though!

There's a lot of Northern Dancer about though. The last four horses I've bought have all had numerous instances of Northern Dancer and they are as varied as a 15.3 full TB chestnut mare, a 16.2 KWPN, a 16.3 1/4 Shire 3/4 TB and a 15hh Anglo Arab. Although he's actually the ShireX's great grandfather I don't think I'd claim he had much influence on her looks, performance or behaviour! The others are all further back than that.

Thanks for the replies! Yes despite the appearances of Northern Dancer in mine and my mums horses lines they are completely different so I can't imagine that horse has had much of an influence :)

Amage, that is SO true about Bobs Return! When my mare turned 8 she settled right down, she sounds so similar to your horse! Once when jumping she jumped the placing pole and fence in one lol, nearly ejected me right out the saddle :D. She also prefered to jump from a long shot. I miss her so much, she was tricky but it kinda made our bond stronger. I cried lots of tears over her but she also gave me my best moments, she had a massive heart and was so kind. I wish she was still here, then again if she was I wouldn't have my current chap and he is a one in a million to me also :).

Halling, the sire of your mum's horse was an incredible racehorse, winning £millions and several group 1's. He was one of the best in the world for his age. He's also been a mega sire and used to have a massive stud fee, something like £20,000.

Where or when, the sire of your horse was pretty good too, he ran really well in the derby. I can remember watching him and he eventually won a group one. He ran in all the best races though. If you type their names into the search on the racing post you can get all the form and details on all the relatives and their winnings. You can also read the commentry with the form for each race, which often gives clues about temperament.

Don't pay much attention to northern dancer. It would be hard to find a racing TB without northern dancer in their bloodlines. He's pretty much the foundation of the modern TB. A prolific sire!!!

Mine has northern dancer on the mare line.

many moons ago i loaned a chestnut gelding with mr prospector in his lines - he was an ex grade b jumper, and he is a spitting image of you both both in looks and ( sounds like ) personality.

Ha! I've only just realised my horse and my mums horse have exactly the same great grandfather on their dams side and also have same great grandfather and great great grandfather on their sires side. They are like cousins lol. Never noticed that before. They both have a similar cheeky streak where they try to chew leadropes and both pull off your hood if you are wearing one. Funny :)
I wish I could trace my family tree as easily :)

Thanks for your comments, I have found them really interesting :)

That sounds cool :). Thanks

Of course this is slightly pointless as I can't breed from my Gelding and my grey mare is dead. I so wanted a foal from her as well :(. However it's really nice learning about them and hearing about other peoples horses with similar ancestry :).

Alot of TB's breeding goes back through a limited number of Sires - Northern Dancer, War Admiral, Sadlers Wells etc.

Im on ex-racehorse number 3 and they are all completely different. Teratai has a massive jump, with fairly limited paces but is a complete sweetheart - best horse I have ever owned.
FourTel is a Dressage superstar (very sadly up for sale :-() and Polhymnia was a psycho! All of them cross over in bloodlines at some point.

No worries - i am always keeping an eye out for horses with mr prospector in their lines - i think theyre lovely honest tb's that jump well and i would really like one in the future :)

Wench your horse is related to mine with Danehill. Danehill on one side and Sadlers wells on the other, not too far back either he looks a very well bred racehorse?!

India, you horses dad won the champion hurdle :D

He is actually a she! When I was offered her, looked at the pedigree and thought yes please! She raced twice, and came last twice. Given a bit more time think she would be ok, but hopefully now she will be hunting/eventing. (have already been shopping for boyfriends for her!)

The champion hurdle at The Cheltenham festival! Only THE most important hurdle race, it's like the Cheltenham gold cup but for hurdlers :). Only a top class horse will win the the champion hurdle :)

One of my mares (ISH) has the same great great grand sire as yours, Danzig. She's bred to jump and probably as we speak is roaming around Tuscany somewhere after yet again jumping out of the field, bl00dy nuisance!
