I went to get my mare in from the field yesterday for a groom. I had left her headcollar on earlier to make it quicker, however she had lost it somewhere! So I headed down to the orchard to look for it in the trees, she followed me like a little puppy. I was thinking how sweet she is following me around!!

Couldn't find head collar in the orchard so thought I would just call her to follow me up and over to the gate, I called and she came. I was walking up the hill from the orchard when she stopped for a munch. I carried on walking and then called her again, could her hear her start to trot to catch up and then looked round to catch her do a buck, rear and gallop.... straight towards me!!! I just thought, s**t she is going to run straight over me to jumped out the way. It honestly scared the life out of me:p

So note to self, however cute it is that she follows me around and how good I feel about our growing bond. Put on a b****y headcollar and lead rope!!!!

After reading the ouch thread I will also wear a hat when grooming!!! lol

We used to have 3 who enjoyed a good 'dance' in the field. If they decided to do it when you were in the field (we tried to avoid it when possible) the best thing you could do was stand still and they would avoid you. It was scary though!

I was too scared to stay put, although it did cross my mind that I could of in fact jumped into her way if she had changed direction to avoid me!!!

My neighbour runs his own race yard, and one race his jockey got thrown at the start line and the horse took off. He showed no sign of slowing down after racing round on his own, so my neighbour stood in the track in front of his horse, waving his arms imagining he would slow down or stop. Unfortunately horse did not stop and ran straight over him!!!! He was lucky to be alive, but needless to say very very broken!! After that the standing in front trick has not appealed to me!!

Even the nicest horses occasionally have a moment! Alf reminding me that standing in the field with a fresh horse, turned out alone, and in the mood to play is not a very good idea!

Where I keep mine he's out with about 10-12 other geldings, a big field in the summer but even then if you've gone out to catch yours and the whole lot of them decide to have a mad 5 mins or major hoolie it's heart in mouth time at times! I just get fierce (vocally) if they come too close at speed and normally have my headcollar and rope to thwack against me to deter them. In the winter it's a much smaller field and even worse :(

I don;t like that, it reminds of before I got my pony and I was riding the school horses who were all kept together. Catching them was fun and games, and a little bit scary too!!

believe it or not your horse does not want to run into or over you and will most often avoid you, have a bit more faith for everything they allow us to do to them.

the horse not pulling up after a race was running in blind panic that is why it ran over the person standing in its way. sigh.

Darcy does this on a regular basis greets me flat out skids to a halt with a hello mummy look on her face always stops in time but still makes my bum go like a rabbits nose!:)

Haha - bum like a rabbits nose!! :D

My 2 are very playful in the field so you do have to be a little careful with them. There's always lots of rug pulling, rearing, boxing, charging etc. They do forget themselves from time to time. Lockie once grabbed me to pull at my "rug" - thankfully got mostly coat and didn't quite pull me right off my feet. You could tell from his whole demeanor that there was no agression, he'd just decided I should play with him. I firmly reminded him that this was not the done thing ;)

They did once though start playing whilst I was stood between them which resulted in squealing and me getting kicked in the stomach as one struck out at the other. Luckily only just caught me but bloody hurt and could have been nasty

The risks we all take though being around horses I guess :)

my lot are usually pretty good however, do not attempt to fix fencing or move fencing when they are in the same paddocks! over excited is an understatement if they think they are goin to get a bit extra grub :)
