Hi All,

Quick question... On my horse's passport (Irish Sports Horse Association) it says her DOB is 01/01/2010. Now I assume she wasn't actually born on new years day, but sometime in the spring of 2010... (Early history unknown!)

Would that make her 7? 8? I know it's usually the age they will be at the end of the year, but I'm totally confused. Not that it really matters anyway!

Thanks xx

It depends what the age is for...the 1st Jan thing is only really relevant for shows and racing (and selling).

My horse was born in June, he is the age he is, though should I sell him I would put 'rising' before his actual birthday.

All horses have their birthday on 1st Jan - regardless of when in the year they were born. (Unless you are in Australia / NZ in which case it is 1st June) So a horse legitimately described as 5 years old on the 2nd Jan will in fact be anything from 4 to almost 6 depending on when in the year they were born. Thats one reason why racehorse breeders like the foals born as early as possible in the year. A 2 year old born in January is going to be much more mature to race than a 2 year old born in December.
